One important lesson that I learned was to always keep a pen handy while reading and writing in the margins. You never know when you might come across an interesting technique that you want to try. Annotating also helps you understand better what you are reading. You won’t be able to remember everything while reading without a pen and marking it. This statement points out to me that a pen can be the highlight of your writing because you can use it to find techniques from other texts and write it down to remember it.
