Introduction-Maria Contreras

Hello, I’m Maria Contreras, but my friends call me Mar. I’m in the dental hygiene major as a freshman student in City Tech College. I was born and raised in Queens, New York, but I also lived 3 years in Mexico where my parents are from. Growing up I always wanted to be a dental hygienist because my mother grew up close to a family that were all dentists. The stories she will tell me of how dedicated the family was to their profession motivated me to be part of this beautiful journey. I have a family of 4 and a cat who they all are the most important people in my life. Some of the hobbies I love are doing crafts and listening to music. Music has been a big part of my life because not only do i love listening to music, but i also have been playing my violin for almost 6 years for church music.

After living for 3 years in Mexico and always talking in Spanish at home, I consider myself to be very fluent in spanish. Although we know that it means I’m always translating important documents or letters from English to Spanish for my parents. However there can be occasions where English turns out to be a little complex. With the help of one of my English teachers I was able to work on having better writing techniques in my highschool years. One of the sports I really love playing is volleyball. Throughout my highschool years, playing volleyball has always made me feel better. I love going to suburban places as a way to relax from the city. I enjoy going to concerts, hanging out with friends and family. Being around the people I love has fulfilled me with positivity to pursue my goals and choices and I think City tech was a right choice. Fun fact, I’m allergic to turtles.

  1. Encantada de conocerte, Mar! I speak some Spanish and love to practice learning new languages. Do you like your name of Mar because you have strong feelings about the sea? I am wondering. I also love dental hygiene department here at City Tech and I have been a number of times to have my teeth cleaned! I also brought my mother to be a patient! It’s a very strong community of hard working students.

Thx so much for the pictures. Now I can picture exactly who you are. I WISH MOST OF MY STUDENTS HAD GIVEN ME PICTURES LIKE THIS TO HELP ME GET TO KNOW THEM ALL! Thx for the last picture which lets me know that your major is dental!

Looking forward to hearing your voice in class. I have also played violin in my youth! Music is a wonderful language that communicates to everyone.
