How is the health of fighters at risk in combat sports, and what measures are being implemented to protect their well-being both during and after competition?
The mentor text grabs the audience’s attention by calling out all contact sport athletes and stating the rapid growth in CTE and other brain diseases. The author uses many different types of research such as studies done by experts, surveys, and historical events. States different percentiles of certain groups, such as studies showing that 90% of boxers have suffered from a concussion. The text incorporates storytelling by giving different scenarios of fighters getting hurt and moving on like nothing happened. Two Brazilian fighters once found a puppy and in order to decide who kept it, they fought until one knocked the other out, deciding who’d keep the puppy. The video essay shows footage of fighters and instances spoken about by the narrator. The background audio is very quiet and focused to what the narrator is saying. The video is 11 minutes long. The primary audience is mixed martial artists and contact sport athletes. With the narrators worried tone, he is trying to warm everybody of the dangers of training and competing in these sports. The video was closed about by stating solutions and how these problems can be controlled and maintained. An aspect I will emulate will be the research aspect. The narrator used very good quality and amounts of research to support his points. I will do more research myself and analyze the research pieces. I will avoid the repetitiveness that the narrator had repeating his same points over and over again. I will do this by stating my point, dropping some supporting research on it, then moving on to my next point.
