Objective:
Use your break to sharpen your design eye, explore your surroundings, and get inspired by the everyday.
Assignment Overview:
Over spring break, your mission is to document and reflect on real-world design you encounter — from the unexpected to the iconic. Think of it as a mix between a creative scavenger hunt and a visual journal.
Part 1: The Hunt (Photos or Sketches)
Find and document at least 5 examples of the following:
- A sign or poster with great typography
- An example of poor design (and explain why it’s not effective)
- A piece of street art or mural that inspires you
- A package design that catches your eye
- Any handmade or DIY design you see (flyers, menus, window displays, etc.)
Part 2: Mini Case Study
Choose one of the five and write a short (150–200 word) reflection answering:
- What works or doesn’t work about the design?
- What principles of communication design are being used (or misused)?
- How would you improve or reinterpret it?
Part 3:
Redesign one of the pieces you found — digitally or by hand — and bring your version to class after break
Deliverables (Due Thursday, 4/24):
- A PDF or slide deck with your photos/sketches, captions, and your mini case study.
- Optional redesign (as a JPEG or PDF).
