SBS 3201

An exploration of theories surrounding appearance, clothing, and fashion, and how they shape cultural identities, perceptions of gender, and consumer behavior in the fashion industry. The course investigates contemporary styles of dress from both U.S. and global cultures.

Dress is studied as a form of communication that reflects personal identity and social roles within systems such as family, economy, religion, and government. The technologies and styles of dress in different societies are examined in relation to cultural behaviors and beliefs about morality, cleanliness, ritual practices, and beauty standards.
