Playing catch up! – Update from the Instructional Design Intern

We’re taking the week off from user testing for spring break! I took my extra time today to focus on some of the projects we were working on before we got started on our user tests in March. I learned more about card sorting, which we’re hoping to use as a user testing method in designing the orientation website. Hopefully in the next few weeks, I will be down at the entrance of the library asking students to organize the structure of the website according to what they think makes the most sense. Also with the orientation website, I created wireframes for some of the ideas Nora and I had for the landing page and for the first page of the orientation site, which would be library services. These might change with the card sorting, but we wanted to get some design ideas visualized.

I also followed up on our databases tutorial, which features three swiping games students can use to find their perfect database match. Those should be on the library website soon. Additionally, I’ve been thinking about the analysis for our user tests, especially regarding using a rubric to determine the success of each task and a table of issues that can organized by number of users with each one. Finally, I’ve been brainstorming ideas for the last tutorial I’ll be making during my time at City Tech: searching for sources. One thought I had was to make a game where you had to choose the best members for your team, with the idea that different search strategies can strengthen your team, or search. Nora and I also discussed a simple “Dos and Don’ts” list, although I hope we can make something more interactive than a list. We also talked about making something similar to the Citation Grail, where students could choose whether to follow the instructions or complete a game to find out more. I’ll report back on our final decision in the comings weeks.
Enjoy spring break!
