Gates Foundation Goes Open Access

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a major player in health-related research. We’re very pleased to learn that the Gates Foundation is now requiring its grantees to publish their work in immediately available (aka Gold) open access journals. This policy doesn’t go into force until January 2017 but between then and now, Gates Foundation grantees  are expected to publish in hybrid (partial) open access journals that make their content freely available 12 months after publication. Way to go, Gates Foundation!

Will Roz Chast win the National Book Award Tonight?

Roz Chast has been nominated for the National Book Award for non-fiction prize for her graphic novel, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? She is one of our favorite cartoonists and the library is ordering several of her books to add to its wonderful graphic novels collection.
Soon, you will be able to *browse* our graphic novels all in one collection–stay tuned!

Library Book Donations for Fall Book Sale

Please donate to the Library’s upcoming Fall Book Sale, which will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, 12:30-2:30 p.m., outside the entrance of the Library, on the fourth floor of the Atrium.  We will accept hard cover and soft cover books in good condition.  These may include fiction, literature, travel, leisure reading, non-fiction of all sorts, and recently published textbooks (nothing before 2010).  We are also accepting DVDs, CDs, and other media.  We cannot accept damaged or heavily annotated books and most technical manuals, directories and handbooks over three years old.  We may select some donations for our library holdings if they meet the needs of our curriculums.
To arrange a donation, please contact Prof. Morris Hounion at mhounion@citytech.cuny.edu or at extension 5491.  All donations should be received by Tuesday, December 2.  We will acknowledge your donation with a thank-you letter but we cannot place dollar values on donated materials.  Information about the library’s gifts policy may be found at http://library.citytech.cuny.edu/policies/gifts.php

OneSearch beta is here!

OneSearch, a new discovery tool under development, is now available on the City Tech Library website. Try it out!
primo
What is OneSearch?
OneSearch is a powerful new discovery tool that allows you to search for e-books, hard copy books, journal articles, and digital collections in one spot.
How does it work?
OneSearch is essentially a vast index of much of the library’s databases, including the library catalog. It does not provide access to every database and resource the library subscribes to so keep searching individual databases and journals as well.
Look further!
Read an excellent introductory post by Professor Jill Cirasella. It includes many useful screenshots.
Check out this Video demoing OneSearch and get the FAQs from CUNY’s Office of Library Services.

October 20-24 is International Open Access Week

8.5x11oaweek2014October 20-24 is International Open Access Week http://www.openaccessweek.org/!
Learn more about Open Access and why it matters to academics and researchers as well as students and libraries. Here is a great handout created by Professor Jill Cirasella, Associate Librarian for Public Services & Scholarly Communication, CUNY Graduate Center http://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/files/2011/05/OA-The-Very-Basics-Oct-2013.pdf (see attached as well).
Join the discussion and keep up with what’s happening related to Open Access on the CUNY Academic Commons. The OA @ CUNY blog http://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/ is a great place to start and the Resources link will lead you to other related sites on the Academic Commons. Interested in attending an event this week? See http://openaccess.commons.gc.cuny.edu/category/open-access-week/oa-week-2014/ for listings.
The library will be doing a faculty program and workshop on predatory publishing on November 11, 5-6:30 pm, Faculty Commons. Anyone with an .edu email address gets spammy emails about journals and conferences–these are usually from predatory publishers. Attendees will learn the hows and whys of predatory publishing, a small but alarming subset of all Open Access publishers. The workshop component will address how to identify hallmarks of predatory publishers. Please rsvp to Professor Keith Muchowski, kmuchowski@citytech.cuny.edu.
