Lets Talk About My Brooklyn

The film My Brooklyn directed by Kelly Anderson is a film that should be known all over New York City. This film speaks high volume and about the true big picture behind all changes in Brooklyn. The film hits home for me, as a Brooklyn native, I have always wondered what was happening to the areas I called home and grew upon. Everything as I got older changed, which is a given in New York City. But, this change was too great and caused most of my family to move out of Brooklyn because of how high the property value was going. Brooklyn is known to be the home of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Caribbeans looking for that “American Dream”. The film shows the change of the famous Fulton Mall that is located in Downtown Brooklyn and how it went from being primarily Black, Hispanic, and Caribbean, to a more deserve area full of big department stores and less small businesses all because Brooklyn zone got changed.

Zoning is the main topic that appeared a lot throughout the film, and was even explain how zoning has changed in Brooklyn throughout the years. Zoning is a big deal anywhere you go because it can cause neighborhoods to change without the knowledge of the people in the area knowing, while business people make a profit no matter what. When Kelly Anderson begins to talk and explain zoning here in Brooklyn, she shows a lot of pictures of Brooklyn and how it use to zoned before 1970’s and after.  Brooklyn became the Brooklyn we know because it was zoned “D” , standing for danger. In those areas many Black, Hispanics, Asians, And Caribbeans moved to. While in Brooklyn a lot of areas came close together as a community and helped clean and keep the neighborhood from going bad. The famous area Fulton Mall was where all those people from different corners of Brooklyn would go and shop and hang out. Then, the area got rezoned with little many people in Brooklyn having n knowledge of what was going to happen and what was happening right under their noses. This topic of rezoning is important because a lot of lies are told to the people on what is going to happen to them within the area. This is what happen in Brooklyn and many people who use to live there are now running out of Brooklyn, looking for another area to plant their roots and let it grow. This is what the film director, Kelly Anderson was trying to portray and explain how this changes might be good, but it might only be good for a small percentage of the people, while the larger percentage have to suffer whatever comes their way. Overall i really enjoyed this film, I even got angry with the people of Brooklyn and angry at how some people dare say to get rid of Fulton Mall not knowing how important that area is to many people of Brooklyn, as myself.
