Notes from today (3/7) and reading/blogging assignments for Tuesday, March 12

Posted on March 7, 2013 by Anne Leonard

Today we discussed metadata – data about data – as well as taxonomies and folksonomies. Slides from today are available here. If you’re still slightly puzzled by the concepts of metadata and controlled vocabularies, review Badke chapter 4 — it provides a few clear explanations and examples and doesn’t take much time. On Tuesday we’ll discuss search mechanics, databases, and how a search engine works. Please read the following:

Bakde, Chapter 3: Database searching with keywords and hierarchies
Liddy, How a search engine works
Agostini, Search engine optimization and international branding

Your blogging assignment is one reading response blog post.

Remember that the draft of your research topic proposal is due on Thursday, March 14. I’m happy to discuss your research topic ideas with you via email, during office hours, or by appointment.
