Facebook’s Privacy Trainwreck

Nomatter what the creaters of Facebook do people will always find someething obscure and unwanted about it.  In the article “Facebook’s Privacy Trainwreck,” Danah Boyd discusses how in 2006 Facebook inplamented the “News Feed” feature.  This was a way that you can see all status updates, groups and even relationship updates.  But ofcourse, there were many who were against this feature claiming it is an invasion of privacy.  I for one do not mind the ‘News Feed” feature, simply because all the information that is displayed on it can be seen on your friend’s home page.  So in fact, Facebook has just made it easier to keep in touch with your friends.

There was, however, one really good option that came out of this; the privacy options.  With the privacy options, we can set our pages so only certain people can see your page, no one can see your page or everyone can see your page.  There also is an option to “block” people from requesting you as a friend.  These security settings are very useful and make going on Facebook more safe and satisfy atleast some of the unhappy users.

It is clear that Facebook will make more changes to better social networking.  There will be groups of people who will like it and there will be those who don’t.  Athough Facebook cannot satisfy everyone, they are doing their best to make social networking safe and fun for all.

I agree when you say “people will always find something obscure and unwanted about Facebook”. Logically it would be quite impossible to make every user happy. But I think theres one key point that the few or many (I’m not sure of the exact numbers) unsatisfied users seem to be forgetting. No one is FORCED to have or keep a Facebook account. If someone is no longer happy with the new features or think there privacy is being violated, then that person should simply delete their account and GET OVER IT. It’s not a NYS law to have a Facebook account, though by the way many people act you would think it was.

Your blog was well composed and detailed and I have to say that Facebook is far away from total privacy no matter how many options of privacy they try to incorporate into their networking. It is very difficult to find a young person who does not own a Facebook account; truth is that this site has become an addiction to several and has overseen the real purpose of socializing with the world. This particular social network promotes the users to post their marital status, city of residence, age, birthday, gender, likes, dislikes and much more. It is very easy for your information to fall into the wrong hands. While we may think we are creating an “all about me” page we are sharing private information with the entire world.
