HUS 3501- Counseling Methods: In spring 2013, I had the pleasure of sitting as one of Dr. Ayala’s students. The course name alone had me intrigued to want to learn more and gather as much as I could from the course. However, I still was not sure what to expect. On the first day, Dr. Ayala had the ability to move the entire class into tears as he had us to go around the room and share our personal experiences that may hinder us from providing care to our clients. As he stated, the helper needs help as well. No truer words have ever been spoken. This course also taught me how to perfect a counseling session and how to hear the client. I learned a variety of counseling techniques such as paraphrasing, developing the stages of counseling, how to self-disclose appropriately and working on my body language.
