Process Documentation

In this video Chef Greg gave step by step details how to cook a pieces of salmon. Even though the chef  made many jokes in the video; it was an easy video to follow to get an end product. The video was place strategically so that all of the steps was clear and easy to follow along.

With respect to his accent some people may not be able to understand his accent; as I was reviewing the comments some viewers thought his accent made the video hilarious.

In my opinion the video was well documented and structured and I actually learn something new about cooking salmon with respect to the color it should be when cooked throughly.

Vanishing Act!

Reading Chapter 5 of the “Vanishing Act” I was a bit confused, because with the multiple papers I write every semester and never used any footnotes nor did I pay attention to any information about the changes. The authors information provided information I was not aware of.
Footnotes obviously have come a long way according to the authors; “some have survived and some hasn’t”. When citing newer websites in recent times; the authors mentioned that the older the website the more accessible it will be.
It was also interesting to learn about top level domain (TDL) this means the ‘Internet page with a parent URL”: for example “com,” “gov,” “org”. “net” which are some of the most common top level domains. The authors also give information about the most reliable and most stable of all the top level domains.
All of the information in chapter 5 of this book give more information that will be helpful in citing and collecting information for my research paper.

BRIC Brooklyn

The map that I found most interesting during the class visit to BRIC, was the map of Luis from Puerto Rico kitchen. It was interesting because I have never seen a map that laid out the life of an individual, the map give great details of Luis’s life. It gave a description of him, his thoughts were also included ; it also give details of the specific area where he lived, whom he live with, when he moved there, the history of his neighborhood and it accounted for every item that was in his kitchen. The map told a story, and thats what made it interesting to me.
The exhibit definitely changed my perception of maps; I have never thought of using a map to represent anything else other that getting directions to a specific place or maybe finding a treasure.
Since I am aware that maps can tell a story. I would love to map out my work space and tell my story; I think it will be very interesting for my friends and followers to see my life as a jewelry stylist and designer just by reading a map.

Library Database Search vs Internet Search

For my research topic finding relevant, current and accurate information is challenging, I have to filter carefully all researched literature.
I used the Citi Tech library database and Google Scholar for information on my research topic. Using Citi Tech’s database was relatively easy but the amount of information I gathered pertaining to my research topic was limited; I began by typing in “Instagram” in quotation marks and without quotation marks more information were produced without the quotation marks.
The internet search engine that I used was Google Scholar searching the same key word in the same manner I used in searching Citi Tech library database; the key word from my topic came up with a lot of useful information directly relating to my topic. In my opinion Google Scholar produced the best results.

Scholarly Browsing

This is my third year in college and I have done multiple research papers and have never used Google Scholar for researching topics for any of my multiple papers. Today in class, using Google Scholar was very helpful. I was able to successfully find relevant information for my topic for the research paper, information that I never found when using other search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. Using Google Scholar produced so much more important and relevant information relating directly to my topic; making it different but not difficult from using the other search engines I used previously.

Research Paper

I have had some minimal difficulty in choosing a topic for my research paper; because I had to work on narrowing my topic in order to focus on one piece of information . Other than that my first draft of my paper is done. Now I am focusing on building my paper. I am a little worried that I may not be able to find information relating to my topic in books and scholarly journals since my research topic is somewhat new, finding content may be challenging . I am also excited to see what kind of new information I  will find  relevant to my topic for this paper.

Badke Chapter 3

From beginning to end of chapter 3 in the book “Research Strategies by William Badke” I was in absolute awe as I kept reading. I have been searching databases for a very long time; I also knew that the use of “keywords” are very important when searching databases. But from reading this chapter it took it to a whole new level. Badke imparted so much information in this chapter that will be  very helpful to me especially as college student.

I do researches regurlarly  and never knew that I was actualy doing it incorrectly, especially when searching for  information pertaining to a specific research topic; In fact, most of the times I usually just google the information needed using a lot of keywords. It never occurred to me that keyword must be very specific and words such as AND, NOT and OR plays a huge part in getting much better and specific results when searching databases.

In this chapter I think Badke was extremely thorough  in divulging valuable, resourceful information that will help me and many other students.

The power of metadata.

The  article about the power of metadata strike me the most this week out of the three articles assigned. I tried the Immersion program that was created by Deepak Jagdish and Daniel Smilkov two MIT students. I was very surprised with my results. I could not imagine other people looking at my information. As the creators stated after using the program you will reflect on your past life. By accessing my email I was reminded of several big steps in my life, personal and professional . A big black circle stood out the most in my data report. This was something I haven’t thought about in years. This data collection even showed me when I first made that email address.

After reviewing my report I asked myself; how can top, influential leaders and members in our society insist that metadata is not important? Looking at my results after running that program, I find it unfathomable that they can firmly say that the collection of such data of individuals does not map out private lives. How can they voice that swooping this sort of data from the public is not intrusive and illegal? After looking at my results it seems like my entire personal and professional  life had played over right before me after as little as five minutes. Looking at my email data showed me the absolute power of metadata.

Aaron Swartz

In my opinion Aaron Swartz motive or motives for downloading so many scholarly journals from JSTOR (a digital library of scholarly articles), is clear. He wanted to make the information and knowledge that is obviously hoarded knowledge and information available for a price.Well that is my thought; obviously there is more to the story, Only to be told by the decease.
JSTOR is available free of charge to users if they use a communal subscription like the local libraries or college library to my understanding but, the college/universities and library still pays a fee for access to the database.
It was victimless crime, and his demise was very sad. As a student I would like to have access to information without paying hefty fees. Students already pay so much for text books; and sometimes additional information is need and that’s where these scholarly journals comes in. Stealing is wrong punishable by law ; but that extensive punishment Aaron received was unacceptable and I think they made an example out of him.
He could easily have had a student give him access to the database; instead he went the other way which I think was more to make a political statement after thinking about it throughly. Additionally, looking at the bigger picture plagiarism would come into play if these journals are open for public use without the fee but, there are strict copywriter laws that should protect the authors. This is a really hard subject to talk about because there are so many things to take into consideration when discussing this touchy subject of knowledge and information available for free, plagiarism and copywriting laws all have to come into play with what Aaron Swartz did.
