Hey everyone! My name is Beatrice and I’m a sophomore at City Tech. I recently changed my major to liberal arts with a specialization in chemistry because it aligns better with my career plans of being a physician assistant. I currently do not work but I consider myself an enterpreneur, I do hair, and I also film sports related content such as basketball games. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and cooking a new recipe.
For the topic I will discuss option 1. Math has always been my favorite subject because I’m good at it once I learn the basics. It is also one of the only subjects that is the same worldwide. When I moved to NY in 2009 and I didn’t speak any English, math was the only subject I understood in school. Math is really important for science so I know this class will be useful for my scholastic journey.

Hey Will, yeah I was born in Italy! I get that often, I came here when I was 8 years old so my speech and accent formed really quickly. I grew up in Bushwick, Brooklyn, so that’s where my way of speaking comes from.

Since we are both going into the medical field, I also can relate to how important this class can be for us since math does play a big role in our careers.

As a former LAS and Chem Tech major here in City Tech (I had three majors), I welcome you to the program.
It is true, math is the same worldwide. It might be taught differently in other cultures, but the concepts are still the same and the expert mathematicians agree on the established rules. If you have new or different ideas than what is being discussed, then I welcome your input, as well as others.
Also, math being important for science is an understatement.
Hi my name is Johan, pronounced (yo-han). Im from Queens, and this is my first semester at City Tech as a transfer student. I transferred from Queens College. I guess I am a freshmen because I changed my major, my major is Construction Management. I chose construction management because I have some work experience in construction. On my own time I like to play and watch soccer. I work part time as a soccer coach for elementary students in after school programs in Brooklyn and Queens.
Im picking topic 2 for this paragraph, growing up as a kid and teenager I always disliked Math. I was never good at it, it was the subject I got lower grades in. I never tried to like it, or change my mind on it. But now I kinda see it as a puzzle. My opinion on it now, is Math is a topic that I can learn and if I work hard and practice I can understand it more. Before it was something I didn’t put any effort into trying to learn. But now I want to actually put in the effort. Plus Math is heavily used in my major.

Weirdly enough, you are not the first coach that has ever graced my classroom. My father was somewhat of a semi-pro in Burma when he was young, and when I was a child, he wanted me to join one of the Prospect Park soccer teams, and then he saw the coaching and promptly considered them bull****. That being said, I fell out of love with the game and have pretty much migrated to baseball at this point.
You are correct. Math is very important in the Civil Engineering aspect of your major. In high school, I had to take some Civil Engineering courses, like surveying, soil mechanics and strength of materials, I wasn’t really good at them. Actually, one of the Professors of Civil Engineering here in City Tech replaced my high school Civil Engineering teacher. But anyway math is really important, and you have to go fairly high in it. So you need to put in that effort to understand the material. 😀

Hey my name is Akeisha, i am in liberal arts and science getting my pre requisites to get into the nursing program. I work as an esthetician doing facials full time while also being a boy mom to my 4 year old son. One thing i love to do is read books you will always catch me reading every spear moment i read mostly fantasie series mixed in with a little dark romance. If I’m not reading I’m doing TikTok’s playing in makeup or sharing my skincare knowledge which I’m not all that great with being consistent doing.
I am answering number 2 which my opinion on maths change was when i was not still implementing what i learned in school. I have not been in school since 2012 i feel like I do not remember anything and i am starting back at square one. If i did not need to do it for school i would avoid it at all cost. I also feel at my age things take longer to stick so i find myself stressed but i will say this mornings class made me very optimistic.

Don’t be alarmed, I have my fair share of skin problems. Sometimes they manifest on my face. Maybe it’s an allergy issue or a diet issue, but heaven forbid that it’s a disease or something. Maybe you could recommend me a skin care regimen or something for the moneymaker, here.
So, I understand the hardships of returning to school after a very long hiatus. I returned back to City Tech at age 31. I had to come back to learn to do something I wanted to do and there were subjects I desperately wanted to avoid. Me? I tried to avoid the foreign language component; I legitimately held out until the last semester. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you should do that; It just means I understand.
In order to pass the class, you will need to commit to the classwork and the homework. There is a strong correlation between mathematics class success and college success, and while one doesn’t cause the other, it does show that you can develop the skills necessary for both. I understand you have multiple responsibilities – to work, to your son, to school. I hope that you can make (not find) time for your studies… that you set aside time in your schedule for this. But also, there are many avenues for tutoring inside City Tech that I will mention in class soon.
Hi Akeisha! It’s so nice to meet you. I’m also on the path toward the nursing program, so it’s really motivating to connect with someone who has similar goals. I really admire how you balance being a full-time esthetician, a student, and a mom that’s a lot, and it shows how dedicated you are. I’m really into makeup too and have been learning more about how to do it better. I’m also interested in skincare products, so I think it’s really cool that you share your skincare knowledge on TikTok!. I can definitely relate to what you said about math. Even when you’ve learned it before, it can feel like starting over after being out of school for a while. It makes sense that it feels stressful sometimes.

I completely understand where you’re coming from Akeisha, I haven’t been in school since 2019. A little more recent but still quite a long time. This is definitely an adjustment for me too. Math has always been my hardest subject. And I also have a 4-year-old son! What a coincidence that is! It’s hard to make time for everything and switch our minds back into learning mode but we can do it and I hope we both not just pass but reach our fullest math potential!

I chose Topic 1. Math has not usually been my favorite subject. I like math when I understand how to do the problems, because it feels good to get the right answer. But when the problems are too hard or the steps are not clear, I feel confused and frustrated. Math is better for me when the teacher explains slowly and I have time to practice. I hope this class will help me understand math more and feel more confident.

Thank you for the request. I will endeavor to be slow and clear in instruction, but I hope that you understand that I have to balance this with amount of material that I am required to cover. You will have to be an advocate for yourself in class. If you need clarification, speak up. It’s not just for you, but if you are thinking it, then someone else in the class is thinking it also.
Also… yes, solving actual problems feels very rewarding because of the effort you put in is rewarded.

Hello! My name is Rei, and I am a freshman transfer student at City Tech. I was formerly at LaGuardia Community College, but I decided to come to City Tech for a change of scenery. I am a nursing major and currently working towards getting into the program here at City Tech. Ever since I was little, I have loved helping people, which is why I did not think twice about committing to this major. On my free time, I love to go on walks, meet up with friends, play video games, and listen to music. First off, welcome to the City Tech Nursing program. It is notoriously hard to get into and just as difficult to stay into. My cousin graduated from it and she currently works around the city.
Now, you sound like an outlier in which you hunkered down and made it your business to understand math, whereas so many of your contemporaries made it their business to avoid it like the plague (something I hope you will never have to experience with one of your future patients.) In that regard, you understand what you must do to pass this course and you will likely have to repeat that same effort that you found so fulfilling. I hope to aid you on your journey.

Math has never been my absolute favorite subject, but I wouldn’t say I dislike it either. I’m actually pretty comfortable with math, and there are certain types of equations and problems that I enjoy solving. Sometimes I do find it challenging when the work becomes more complex or when I don’t understand a concept right away, but I see those moments as opportunities to improve. I know math plays an important role in developing critical thinking and problem solving skills, which will be especially useful in nursing. Overall, I try to stay positive and keep building my confidence as I continue learning and solving problems.

Yay, another nurse. Welcome to the Program, and I know you understand that you will be held to a high standard, like in this class. What you said about math and critical thinking is quite true. It’s about conceptual understanding, but also pattern recognition and developing solutions to problems. Even if in the nursing field, problems may not be mathematical in nature, the mindset that you develop after solving problems (mathematical or otherwise) will go along way in helping you pass college and be a successful nurse.
Perhaps you should consider connecting with the other nurses in this class. You’re going to be together for many classes within the next two-four years, and your short term goals are to pass my course.
hi my name is Emily, im 17 and this is my second semester. The program i want to get in is RAD TECH. The reason why i want to do Rad Tech is because i find it very interesting, at first i wanted to do sonogram but when i came here and heard about rad tech i also found interest in it. I like listening to music like The weeknd, kendrick, or 54 ultra.
The option i chose is #1: Math was never my favorite class, for me i take longer trying understand the formulas. Not just that but i kind of suck at test taking, i feel like no matter how hard i try i always end up forgetting. Maybe thats bad to say but i really do think i suck at tests. Last semester i had to withdrawn the class because i didn’t know what my grade was and also felt like i was falling behind. I tried tutoring and just studying but i guess i also just lost interest in it, for this semester i want to try harder.

Ah another Rad Tech student. As I said to the other Rad Tech students, I strongly suggest that you consider forming a group amongst yourselves. You will likely spend 2-4 years together, so it’s likely a good idea to increase your professional and support networks.
Being not-so-great at test taking isn’t a rare occurrence unfortunately, and I suggest you check with the Student Success Center for help. If it is a mental block, then I suggest Counseling services. Either way, I am here for you in the event that you need help. Acknowledging is always the first step, then it’s time for action. If you know that you must go for tutoring, then don’t ‘”find” time for tutoring, *make* time for it. Dedicate yourself to getting all the help you need and are welcome to.
Hey Emily, Im also interested in the rad tech program. math gives me anxiety I almost always wanna give up or drop a class that is anything math related the interest is just not there for me, but we got this and we will get through this class together ! Hi my name is Maggie and Im a Sophmore, I just recently declared a major in healthcare policy and management. I decided on this major because I always saw myself doing good in a business/corporate field. However, in the future I want to be a fashion designer and create my own clothing line. Fashion and art has always been my two favorite passions. In my free time I enjoy listening to music, reading or going out to eat with my friends.
Option1: For as long as I can remember, I never had a good relationship with math. So much so that I would avoid taking certain math courses. For some odd reason, I always ended up doing well in my math classes especially in High school even when I struggled. This semester I see myself trying harder to understand math classes and better myself now so I don’t struggle in the future.

Hello everyone, I’m Jeremiah and I’m a Marketing Major and I’ll be graduating in june which I’m excited about. A couples things that I like to do is going to concerts, Listening to music, writing raps, and creating or building things out of different items. I am also shy but when I open up and start talking I have a great funny personality.
The option I chose was #1 and math was never my favorite subject and still is not my favorite because before I didn’t like math but I could deal with taking a math class but over the years it just became so much harder with letters being added on to math that when it became me challenging and I was like nope this is not for me, that is why I decided to take math at the end in college it might be risky but I got to work extra hard and study to get a decent grade so I can pass but also learn and understand at the same time.

Being shy and having trouble opening up is something I have far too much experience in. As a college student, it is a necessity to overcome this in order to defend your work for your degree and it is a process that I’ve never gotten used to. I don’t like to be the one talking, yet I am the educator and I have to. And if I want to move forward professionally, I have to constantly work at it.
Ah, the ever faithful “math… until they started using letters” cliche. The fact of the matter is that the letters, or variables are supposed to represent either a solution to a problem/ exercise or to be representative of all numbers that a mathematical rule can apply to. Eventually, I got used to just working with letters, taking solace in the fact that in the level of math I was working at, no matter what I was doing, it would be true for all the numbers that it would work with. I knew I couldn’t actually compute with them, I just had to represent what I was doing with them. It cut a lot of thinking once I developed trust in the letters. This story may not necessarily represent what you need to do, but it should at least represent that fear of math can be overcome.
Hello my name is Ja’Den, I’m 19 and this is my second year of college. I am pursuing a bachelors degree in computer systems. I hope to have a career in the coding and tech field as I always been super interested in technology. The field I mostly want to get into after college is the cyber security. I want to get into this field as it see interesting and also because I believe it will be an easy job that isn’t very energy consuming.
I choose topic 1 due to the fact that math has always been my favorite subject. Since I was younger my best grade has always been math. What made math my favorite is that in math you follow specific rules based on the equation or word problem you are given, this makes math easier to comprehend for me. The only thing I can say I don’t like about math is dealing with geometry and shaped. I often get confused and need to backtrack when dealing with them.

Welcome to one of the new additions to our programs here in City Tech, the Cybersecurity program. I see you are going to have to move up quite a bit in mathematics and so I would strongly advise that you put in serious effort to pass this course. Heck, after passing this semester (and you *will* put in all the effort to pass this course), I suggest that you take MAT1375, MAT1475, MAT1575, and (if you are willing) MAT2675 in consecutive semesters. Do not take a semester off from math. It is ultimately detrimental to someone in your major.
I can’t say that you will not deal with geometry, it is a requirement to understand trigonometry and other topics in algebra.
Hi, everyone, my name is Alina, and I’m a freshman at CityTech. My major is Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging. I chose this major because knowing about X-rays and all the different types of scans has always interested me to the point that I wanted to learn more about it and work in that field. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music like rock, pop, and Spanish music.
The topic that I chose is option 1. Math has never been my favorite subject because I tend to get stuck on problems. It gets frustrating whenever I can’t find the solution to it, especially when I do well on some problems, but then I always tend to get stuck on the harder ones.

Hello everyone. My name is Yin Min Han. You can call me Yasmin if you find my name a bit hard to pronounce. Nice to meet you all. I am 25 years old and I moved to the USA in 2023. I am Burmese, born and raised in Myanmar(Burma). I finished high school in 2016 and attended the University of Yangon specializing in English Literature for 3 and a half years. Things did not go well in Myanmar starting from 2019. There was a big political change and apparently it was not safe enough for everyone. Lucky me! I won an immigrant visa to the USA and I got a chance to move here. So I had to leave my parents behind, my education behind and so was my career. I used to be an English as a second language teacher in my country. Since after I moved to NY, I have been working at the hotel in Lower East Side, Manhattan. Now I am a Front Desk Manager there. After drastic change of my life and career, I decided to join college again in this spring, taking advantage of my flexible schedule at work. I am planning to join the major of Radiology. To be honest, I didn’t really know the radiologist as a profession. I thought it was part of what the doctors do in my country. When I learn about that specific profession, I find it very fascinating and I decided to try a new career. I like reading books with the genre of misery or romance. But it’s been a long time I have not read books. I like listening to pop and country music. My favorite songs can be international, like English, Burmese and even Korean. In my spare time, I do very random things. That can be sleeping, eating out with my beloved ones, watching popular shows or if the weather is nice enough, I like to explore the city.
I would like to choose topic 2 related to Math. When I was young, I was scared of Math. Math gave me anxiety when I believed that I was not doing fast enough. Some of my Math teachers and even my Dad forced me to love Math as they did but I never liked it until middle school. When I got to high school, I wanted to do well in school so I finally decided to try my best in Math. I felt that I didn’t have to like it or hate it. I no more judge myself if I am doing fast or not. I figured out myself that I could focus better when I was calm. I am still working on it when it comes to being calm but that was big moment which changed my opinion of Math. I want to do well in this Math class and I will try my best. I have faith in my professor and my classmates that our class will be fun and efficient.
Interesting. My parents are also from Burma… Chinese Burmese. My mother is from Yangon, herself. I went in 2003 because they said it would be their last time going. Fair warning, I cannot speak any Burmese or any Chinese dialects for that matter.
Anyway, while you’re here… Welcome to the Radiology program at City Tech, it is a very hard program to get into, but I think it’s one of the programs where you have to put in great effort to stay in. I believe there are other Radiology / Rad Tech students in the class and it would be a great idea to get their contact information, as you will likely be together for the next 2-4 years.

Hi! My name is Taylor and I’m 24. My major is rad tech. Right now I’m just completing the pre-requisites. I have always loved science, biology in particular. My interests shifted to the field of medicine in particular around 14 years old. I have to admit my first binge watch of Greys Anatomy had a lot to do with that, which I’m aware is cliche and that the show gets a lot of things wrong, but I really saw myself in those characters. I could just picture myself working in a hospital and helping patients in some way. I am a mom to a 4 year old boy and when I was pregnant with him in 2021, I really started researching radiography and sonography. The technology just blew my mind. Being able to identify what’s going on in a person’s body without having to do invasive procedures is such an amazing innovation and it will only continue to develop. I dream to be a part of that and also deliver compassionate care to the patients I work with so that their medical journeys don’t have to be a scary experience. In my free time I really enjoy reading, makeup, and exploring the city with friends, though free time is scarce with the responsibilities I have.
I will answer question number 2. My opinion on math dramatically changed around 8th grade or my freshman year of high school. I had mostly gotten through school with ease but for some reason math only got harder and harder for me, and it got harder for me to retain information about it and remember all of the rules. By senior year I was so ready to be done with it. I’m hoping my opinion on math can change in this class with the proper resources like tutoring. I do really desire to understand math with ease, but I am still a little worried about whether desire to do well is enough.

Another Rad Tech student. At this point, it should be cliche, but it’s no less relevant. Build relationships with the other Rad Tech students in this class. The greater the support group you have, then the better experience you will have not just in this class, but in college overall.

That you have a 4-year-old makes it more imperative that you put in the effort to pass this class, if only to give him an example to aspire to. Do not hesitate to make time to do what you can to understand the material. Speak with me, speak with tutors, advocate for yourself and your colleagues in class… do anything to help yourself.
Hello everyone, my name is Luca, and I am in the Technology Education program. Was math ever my favorite subject? I suppose no, since I have only two classes left to graduate, being MAT 1275 and 1375, which I plan to take in the summer. In a way, I always been intimidated by math courses and avoided them as much as possible. Like everything in life, success in math takes dedication and hard work. Hello! Everyone, my name is Gabriel! and I am a lower junior at City Tech. I was born and raised in New York City, living my whole life in the US for almost 25 years already. I am currently majoring in radiology technology and medical imaging. I chose this major because I am interested in how the technology is used to help diagnose and treat patients. In my spare time I love going to the gym or sometimes enjoy playing futbol in an indoor field with my friends.
For the topic, I will discuss option 1. Math has not always been my favorite subject, but I have grown to appreciate it more over time. In the past, I found math challenging because it required a lot of precision and there was usually only one correct answer. I also find it challenging at times because there is often only one correct solution in certain problems, which can feel limiting and stressful compared to other subjects. When concepts move quickly, it can be difficult to keep up, especially if I miss a step in the process. Even though math is not my favorite, I understand its importance and am willing to put in the effort to improve, especially since it plays a role in my academic and career goals.

Be careful with the “one correct answer” mindset. There are often different answers that are equivalent. What sucks that this is college, and I will not sugarcoat the fact that due to limited time, this often means that concepts may blow past you before you even know it, so it is important to make time outside of class not just for homework, but also for studying. And this message isn’t strictly just for your math class; it goes for all other classes also.
Hi, I’m Nazarii Moroz. Originally I’m from Ukraine and moved 2 years ago. Math has not always been my favourite subject. I sometimes find it challenging because one small mistake can change the entire answer, and that can be frustrating. Math also requires a lot of focus and practice, which can feel stressful, especially during exams. However, I do appreciate that math is logical and has clear rules, and it feels satisfying when I finally understand a problem or solve it correctly. So, now i’m trying my best to learn, memorise and study.

You’re correct. One small mistake can change an entire answer, but that is the nature of logic in general, and not just mathematics. Practice is incredibly important, of course, and I would strongly advise that you do not just stop at when you understand the material. Don’t stop when you are just “good” at the material. Don’t stop when you’ve mastered the material. The material might be used elsewhere. Mathematics doesn’t end with the next topic or at the end of the class; it continues and builds upon itself often. There may be detours along the way, but eventually, something will use it as a foundation.
There is one word that I do take issue with in your response… “memorise”. That is a very difficult strategy for a lot of students in this school in mathematics. However, that strategy works if you understand the foundations of the material, which is ultimately my philosophy for teaching. So please, don’t be alarmed if I am going about it “the long way”.
Hi, Nazarii I know it could be a little challenging; trust me, math isn’t for everyone, but I do agree if we took our time and practiced, I believe we would have no hard time in solving these math problems.

I was born in Queens, but I am originally from Nicaragua.The biggest country in Central America. Math has not always been an area where I thrive, but with proper studying habits and persistense i look forward to this semester and this class (and hope for the best).
I definitely agree and belive peoples perception of math changed, I specifically believe that it happened when “letters” were added to math. It must’ve happened and hit so hard because we were younger and were used to simple maths, and once we saw letters, it confused us and made us wonder why “English” or “letters” were now in our simple maths equations.

I’m glad to see that you are in Nursing. My cousin graduated from the Nursing program, and it is a HIGH ACCOUNTABILITY profession, so you need to be serious with your work and your required studies.
I understand the difficulty with the concept of using letters in mathematics. I just remind myself that the letters are supposed to represent any/all numbers and that (while they have no defined value) they represent what is being done to numbers and not necessarily be simplified afterward. I hope that makes it easier to grasp why we use letters and other symbols in math.
Hi Im Leianna, but I go by Lee. My major is currently health science. I am working towards the radiologic technology program. I chose this major because after not attending college for four years I wanted a career I can look at and be proud of. I sing on my free time , I make music and write songs. I also enjoy making music videos and using music as my creative outlet. I have started reading more book from an author called Freda McFadden , her books are sooo good, especially if you enjoy twist and turns and shocking outcomes.
Math and I have a complicated relationship. I can get through math, but sometimes it is literally my worst nightmare. I can grasp the concepts but then it starts getting tricky sometimes when it is being taught to me. I am better at picking it up myself and finding shortcuts and little tricks to help me understand, instead of exactly how it is being taught to me. It’s not the math itself , but sometimes I can get a little lost. I can do well in math, but it is my least favorite subject, I am good at understanding stocks and trading, or how to build my credit, and pay my bills, but I definitely have a lack of understanding for everything else math related. I am always willing to learn, but math is one of things I am not a fan of, but definitely good to know, especially if your going into a field that requires a lot of math and working with numbers.

Good morning, everyone! My name is Rosalba, and I’m in my second semester of college, majoring in radiology technology. Originally, I was interested in child psychology, but in high school, I had the opportunity to work at a hospital for cancer patients called MSK. There, I shadowed a child psychologist and quickly realized the pros and cons; for example, working with children is twice the work because you still have to deal with communicating with their parents, etc. However, I saw other doctors, including one named Leticia, who introduced me to the radiology team. I was fascinated by how they captured X-ray images and used advanced technology to diagnose and treat diseases. I also loved the flexibility of their schedules. Outside of school, I enjoy going to the gym. It’s a peaceful escape where I can focus on my fitness goals while listening to favorite tunes. In terms of music, I love listening to things that make me want to dance while working out, like “What You Saying” by Lil Uzi.
Sometimes people can recognize a time when their opinion of math dramatically changed either for the better or the worse. Tell us about it.
Math has always been a favorite subject of mine. I’ve consistently felt confident in my ability to identify problems and apply the appropriate functions to solve them. In high school, I benefited from great teachers support who would take out school time so that I can study better on the subjects . College, however, presents a different set of challenges. you do have to advaote for your self and make sure you’re communicating with your teacher to get that extra help. Effective time management is also important , especially when balancing tutoring and studying. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by personal matters and lose track of academic responsibilities, which can lead to falling behind. But, I believe that math can be manageable if you invest the time to understand and study each function for every topic.
Hello! My name is Amra. This is my first semester as a freshman. I felt that I would be behind starting in the spring but I feel right in place. I am majoring in radiology because of how much I enjoy learning about science. It is a difficult subject but if you really pay attention to it, it’s very much fun.
I don’t have a good relationship with math. I have always struggled trying to understand it. I do believe that I try my best but yet when it comes to solving a problem on my own I always make a mistake somewhere. It gets me upset because I want to understand the logistics of math but i mentally can’t. For this class, I will be trying new tactics in order to pass with a good grade. But, I also want to learn something new along the way so I feel accomplished at the end.
