Don’t forget to tell us which topic you chose.

Topics (choose ONE).

  1. Was math ever your favorite subject? If so, when was it? What about math made it your favorite? If math has never been your favorite subject, what about it do you not like?
  2. Sometimes people can recognize a time when their opinion of math dramatically changed either for the better or the worse. Tell us about it.

Extra Credit. Get to know your classmates! For extra credit, write a response to one of your classmates’ comments. Do you feel the same? Did you learn anything? Do you have any advice? Be kind.

  2. Ashley Guzman

Hi my name is Ashley, my current major is undeclared but I’m currently working on joining the nursing program so i’m taking all my pre – requisites for that as of right now. My favorite artists that I like listening to are Brent Faiyaz, Peso Pluma, Drake; I honestly listen to a little bit of everything. On my free time when I’m not working I like listening to music, binge watch shows & movies, and spend time with my dog. I would say I’m a person that likes to be outside to try new things or go on little adventures and just enjoy the little moments with friends and family. I am not much of a reader but I do enjoy going on mountain hikes in the summer it brings me peace in a way.

I chose Topic 1 because for me Math was personally never my favorite subject. I feel like growing up I always struggled on math which is why I never really enjoyed it. Sometimes it wasn’t even the teacher teaching it I just wouldn’t understand it wether it was fractions, rounding, etc as a kid even sometimes now I feel a little slow not being able to understand it as fast as others. I wouldn’t say I hate math because there are times I do understand it but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite when it comes to math I say I have a love/hate relationship with it.

      Hello Ashley,

I’m glad to know that you entered our class. I understand the love/hate relationship that many have with math. I myself used to have it. I could tell you how that changed but honestly, it is ultimately your relationship and we all know how it feels when someone else interferes in our relationships. I could utter any one of the many cliches other educators have likely told you, but for the most part, they are true. You do have to get yourself invested in the class in order to pass it in a satisfactory manner.

      Other statements:

      • If our class goes online for a snow day, there is a dog tax. We hear dog, we get to see dog. 😀
      • Please don’t skip class for a concert. I have a story about that…
  3. Zidane Rahman

Hello everyone, my name is Zidane. This is my first semester at City Tech and I am a liberal arts major. In my free time, I like to play video games and spend time with my two cats, Zelda and Nino. When I am able to, I enjoy going on trips with my family. I look forward to this semester.

Math was not my favorite subject. Honestly, I had a hard time with math for a very long time. I am working to make my math skills better. Word problems have been the biggest challenge for me. I hope this class helps me make my math foundation stronger.

    • Victor Lee

      Hello Zidane,

Now… did you name your cat after the titular Princess Zelda?

Well, I’m at least glad that you are acknowledging that you are in need of making your math skills better. That is the point of this class: to help you build your math skills. The reality of the situation is that you will inevitably see many word problems over the course of the semester; it is the objective of this class for you to encounter problems and try to solve them with mathematics.

If you are having trouble, please speak up for yourself in class or see me outside of class. I want you to pass, but it will be harder if we do not communicate with each other.

    1) I choose number 1 I would say’s maths is not my favorite subject the reason sometimes is complicated to find results and also hard to understand but isn’t easy to solve it.

  5. Caitlin Luna

Hi everyone, my name is Caitlin, and this is my first semester attending City Tech! My major is currently undeclared, but my goal is to gain admission into the nursing program. The thing I most enjoy is spending time with my two cats, Charlie and Figaro. When I’m not doing that, I love to go hiking or rock climbing whenever I can. I work/teach at a bouldering gym, so I spend a lot of my time there. I try to read often, but I also like listening to podcasts. I have a degree in history and really love learning new things about the subject, so I usually gravitate towards books/media that revolve around it in some way.

I don’t know if I’d say my opinion of math ever dramatically changed. But there did come a point where I started viewing it from a different perspective. I never really enjoyed math or did particularly well in it when I was growing up. I just always felt like I’d never be able to understand it as well as some other people did. When I took a college-level math course for the first time (unfortunately, the credit didnt transfer over :/ ), I had a really great professor who helped me realize that not liking math isn’t always equivalent to being ‘bad’ at it. I was getting out what I was putting in. I tried to shift my mindset towards it as something that can be beneficial or a means to an end. I actually ended up getting an A in that class, which was a first for me when it came to the subject. Even though I don’t think I’ll ever necessarily enjoy math or be the best at it, I went from really dreading it to being more neutral, which is about as dramatic an opinion change as I think I’ll ever have on it.

    • Victor Lee

      Hello Caitlin,

Ooh a rock climber/boulderer. Nope. I am afraid of heights. No ma’am, I will not climb a rock at this age, no way. Nope…

A degree in history? So then you already know what it takes to pass college. Excellent. I hope you can help other students learn the necessary skills to succeed in college.

Well, it is most certainly true that many students confuse the idea of disliking mathematics with actually being bad at math. I’m glad you passed your college algebra course. This course… will not be as difficult in my opinion (dangerous words in math education). I hope material we will discuss over the course of the semester will be beneficial to you over the course of your nursing career.

No pressure on figuring out your major! There is time to explore the options !

  6. Danna

Hello everyone my name is Danna. This is my first semester at city tech. My major is Undeclared but my goal is to either do dental hygiene or radiology. My biggest dream in life is to become a Dentist one day. I can’t say “I love reading” but I’m interested in books about following your dreams, listening to your heart and personal growth. My favorite book (the only one that I was able to finish until the end) is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. I really enjoy spending time at the gym. It helps me a lot when I have too much in my mind or sometimes when I want to be away from the world I love to watch a romance K-drama. I like spending time with my family and I also have a German Shepherd which for some reason has become moms favorite child.

i chose topic 1.  To be honest it has never been my favorite subject and it was the reason why I was so scared to start college because I feel like I’m smart enough for math. In high school I would get bad grades in math because when I would get my test my mind would go blank and forget about what I learned. I don’t know if it was because I was too nervous or didn’t trust myself. I would see some of my classmates cheating in order to get a good grade but me? no. I was even scared to try to copy, so my grades in math were low. The reason why I don’t consider myself smart enough for math is because I see people doing “simple equations” very fast in their head but I can’t do that. I would really like to learn how to be really good in math, I’m currently working on getting better at math. I believe that math opens a lot of doors for you in the future and in any career you want to study.

  7. Jennifer virto

Hi my name is Jennifer. I’m from the Bronx. Currently I’m studying to become a dental hygienist. During my free time I like to read books, I like to draw and hang out with my friends. I love going out to eat different cuisine. So far my favorites are Asian foods and Mexican foods.

math is not my best subject. I’ve taken remedial math classes twice already. Anytime I see big numbers or formulas I get overwhelmed and my brain shuts down. A big struggle for me are fractions, writing out formulas and scientific notations. I second guess my answers and formulas a lot I think I just overwhelm myself unnecessarily because I’m scared of getting the wrong answer.

  8. Rebecka Numa

Hey, everyone! My name is Rebecka (Ree for short) & i am a dental hygiene major here at City Tech. In my free time, i like watching crime solving centered TV shows and putting together outfits! Im hoping to travel this year which i’m really looking forward to.

For me, math has always been a subject I was iffy about. I would find that when i completely understood a math assignment, completing it would always be fun. However, when not understood it would always feel like the worst thing on earth lol. I know understand that math is what i make it! I try my best to understand to the best of my ability and that’s what works for me.

  9. Justin Vasquez

As any introductions go my name is Justin, and I am a returning student to City Tech in my second year, following a larger gap in between my schooling. I am currently a Marketing and Sales major and have spent a vast number of my years prior to this point working my way up from sales supervisor to assistant store manager for two major retailers. I currently live in Queens but have spent time in all of the boroughs with the exception of Staten Island. I enjoy reading, mainly books about philosophy and society. I also enjoy photography.

    Topic 1

In regards to prompt 1 I have never been to fond of mathematics. Growing up I spent time struggling to grasp formulas. It has never been my strong suit and i can just recall several negative experiences with teachers that hindered my scope on the subject. Coming into college originally it was the only score that held me responsible for taking remedial classes which hindered my scope on the entire experience. After spending time in the work force i can say i recognize its merits and importance in the field. Here giving it another shot to improve my skills.

  10. Xian

Hello, My name is Xian Yeung 🙂 my hobbies are drawing and playing video games here and there alongside with school work. Math isn’t my favorite subject, however I do like taking other subjects like psychology class or anything health related. The main reason why I don’t favor math classes is because I have difficulty a memorizing things in general. I learn best/memorize stuff written as much as possible to catch up because I am not really a digital person and paper works fine for memorizing things.

I plan on going to tutoring for additional help so I won’t fall behind in this class. I chose health science as my major because I wanna be on track for pre-med and hope to attend medical school in the future
