I attended a networking event at the Society of Illustrators called Illuminating Headlines: How Editorial Illustration Brings Text to Life. The event featured three panelists currently working in the illustration industry who shared valuable advice that I hope to carry throughout my career.
Victoria shared a piece of advice that stood out to me: “You’re in a phase where someone wants to be in your phase.”This resonated with me because I often find myself constantly wanting more or focusing on the next step. Her words served as a reminder to stay present and appreciate each stage of my creative journey.
Armando encouraged artists to “Ask for more than what they offer.” His advice emphasized the importance of advocating for ourselves as creatives, understanding our value, and fighting for the arts within the industry.
Melinda mentioned “Looking at other people’s work instead of a blank page.” This advice highlighted the importance of seeking inspiration from others. As artists, originality is important, but creative references can help spark ideas and guide the creative process.
