Where to Find jobs in the Design Industry

Last week in class the Professor went through the different methods we could go through to find work as designers and creatives in the industry. Since we are all students, we are always a part of the dance that you need experience to get work, and yet without the work, we won’t have experience! So we were given some tips on how to get our foot in the door and gain the experience we need.

One of the methods the Professor went over was using job search engines to look for work. A lot of companies put up if they need a designer, whether long term or just for a project. I think this is the method most commonly used among college students and professionals because so much of what we do is online. It gives you a wide range of what’s out there to expand experience and portfolio work.

Another unique method would be to use a job agency. It’s basically a method where the agency  connects you to design firms or advertising companies to work for them. This connection could be for a season or just one project it really depends on what’s needed. I think this is a smart method to get started in the industry because you get help starting out. It can be hard to get your work or your resume to stand out if it’s just on paper against others. This is a great way to have someone vouching for your level of work without you being there.

The only thing I think I would have to get past would be the fact that the agency takes a portion of your check for finding the job for you. Of course this is fair because they did do some of the leg work, but it’s still the designer’s creative abilities that kept them in the room. Nevertheless, we don’t get anywhere completely alone so compensation is only right.

To conclude, in last weeks class we learned the methods of getting work out in the world. This can help us if we’re just starting out or if jobs near us become scarce.
