Introduction

Thank you for visiting my ePortfolio that contains the skills that I have learned during my time as a dental hygiene student and my passion for the dental field.

As a child of two dentists, one might say that I was born into dentistry and the field. However, in contrast to everyone’s first thought when they hear this about me, up until midway through high school, my passion was in engineering and mathematics. Ever since I was a child, my dream was to become an engineer. I was always interested in robotics, physics, and mathematics and had engineering programs on my mind as I planned for college as a freshmen in high school.

All this changed when I somewhat involuntarily followed my parents on a volunteer medical relief team to help those affected by the Nepal earthquake in 2015. Our team wasn’t anything special or sophisticated; a small group of doctors of different specialties, nurses, two dentists, one hygienist, and one dental assistant. During this week long trip, I volunteered as a dental assistant and was able to experience the impact that dentists and hygienists can have on the quality of life on their patients up close for the first time. As many of the patients that we treated didn’t have access to proper dental care their whole life, even with the minimal treatment that we provided, such as extractions, composite restorations, and SRP, I saw countless lives that were changed for the better.

After this experience, I voluntarily went on several more volunteer medical relief teams to help refugees and those that did not have access to regular dental care in countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, and India. Every trip I went on only solidified my dream of pursuing a career in dentistry. After graduating NYU with a major in Biology, I wanted to make my goal a reality and started my journey as a dental hygiene student.

Since then, I started to work as a dental assistant while attending school for dental hygiene and every part of my experience has been rewarding. Learning new skill sets as a hygienist and learning the process of various dental procedures while assisting chairside as a dental assistant has been exciting and fascinating to learn. Now that I am very close to becoming a RDH, I am looking forward to finally treat patients in a real world setting as a professional dental hygienist!
