Learning on the Job: WK 4

Priscilla Du Preez

Having a mentor during my internship has been instrumental in my growth as a graphic designer. My supervisor’s unwavering support has strengthened my confidence and deepened my understanding of design principles and aesthetics. His constructive feedback has sharpened my skills, enabling me to approach projects with greater creativity and precision. Moreover, his encouragement has pushed me to explore new techniques and refine my design style. I am truly grateful for his guidance and eager to continue learning and evolving under his mentorship.

In terms of my area of concentration—communication design—I’ve learned how to take core design concepts and apply them in real-world marketing scenarios, especially within the luxury retail industry. From creating social media content to capturing and editing event photos, I’ve had the chance to work directly on design tasks that align with what I’ve studied in class. I’ve also gained insight into brand identity and how crucial consistency is across digital platforms.

Beyond design, I’ve gained a better understanding of how the luxury watch industry operates and how external factors like market trends or price increases affect business strategy. For example, we’ve been doing a lot of outreach leading up to a price adjustment, and that’s taught me how design and communication must work in sync with business goals and timing.

While my focus is on creative work, I also support the team with occasional clerical tasks—such as organizing media folders, tracking outreach progress, or helping prepare materials for events. These responsibilities have helped me develop time management and teamwork skills.

A typical day at the internship involves checking the boutique’s social media schedule, brainstorming content ideas, editing photos or reels, and helping the team prepare for walk-ins or VIP events. It’s a blend of design, branding, and hands-on marketing—and it’s shown me how versatile and valuable a design degree can be in today’s economy
