Looking back, I realize that throughout my design journey, I have referenced or incorporated elements of other artists’ creative work, especially during my early projects and my personal projects. However, I’ve always made it a point to credit them properly. In school, my professors emphasized the importance of acknowledging artists, whether it was through citations, captions, or direct credits in my work.
For example, if I used a photograph, illustration, or typeface that wasn’t my own, I ensured the artist’s name was included in the project description or design credits. In group projects, we were also taught to verify copyright permissions. Before going to school, I didn’t fully understand the legal and ethical implications of using someone else’s work, but now, I’m much more aware of how to properly attribute credit and respect intellectual property.
