During this internship I was able to enjoy my experience and had a lot to learn. I learned a lot related to social media content. I am also glad the presentation went well. Just recently my latest design was posted. I am glad that I took the challenge even if it meant going out of my comfort zone.

I have worked on a Volunteer Day post and Human Rights Day post. The supervisors have been liking my work. It was great to see the Human Rights post on social media. On top of that I am close to fishing my hours. For the National Cupcake Day post I want to make a short animated video that can be used as an Instagram reel and Facebook story. With my hours almost done and also working on the presentation, it feels good to reaching the end.

Blog 14- App Review Libby

Libby is an app by Overdrive where one can access ebooks. All you need is a library card to register. Here you can access the catalogue of your local libraries. During my semesters in college I made it a deal to myself that I would read more books. I downloaded Libby so I can do just that. When I was younger I often went to my local library to borrow books. I have not gone at all in a long while, I did not have a library card and the pandemic did not help at all. I decided to take one out when I was able to. I was then told to download this app so I can have access to their catalogue. Physical and even ebooks can cost money. So being able to borrow books for free and use the catalogue of my local library felt great. I was able to read a couple books, many of whom were award winners or best sellers. I even have some on hold. Audiobooks and magazines are also available. One downside is the audible books cannot be sended to audible, other than that it’s easy to use and effective.

Blog 13-Ted Talks

The key point Chris Anderson points out is that a speaker’s job is to share an idea. Not just any way but effectively. He gives four guidelines that can help a speaker build their idea. He shares that an idea should help people, change a perspective for the better or bring inspiration. Amy Cuddy’s talk about Fake it till you become it. She starts out by talking about body language and then poses. She also talks about the science of assertive presence and attitude. She talks a little about herself, how she felt powerless and an imposter when told to fake it. She then told the audience that they can also gain confidence which can change their outcomes. I think her idea was focused. Her talk about how body language can shape who we are was interesting. Both talks I think are useful for presentations. Andersons talk of having a main idea and Cuddys talk in body language can help in knowing how to present. As graphic designers presenting may not be the first thing that comes to mind yet presenting pitches and ideas comes with the job. Knowing how to do so effectively can make a project or design get approved.

Blog 12-Virtual Tour

The virtual exhibit I looked into is the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul virtual exhibit on Korean Artists since the 1970. As someone interested in other cultures this was one that fascinated me. The exhibit showcased the art history of modern and contemporary art from the 1970s to the 2000s. The first work that got my attention is from Han Man-Young in 1987 titled, Reproduction of Time 87-7. Its dimensions are 51×90×10cm made with mixed media. The subjects you see are the bottom half of a venus head, an hourglass and a boy pulling a foal. Here we see Han borrow western classics and reconstruction. This is Korean Hyperrealism. The point in Korean hyperrealism is the emphasis of objects. It would depict these objects and then the landscape would be flat and endlessly sprawled. This created a juxtaposition. We can see it in this painting with the three objects and flat sprawled landscapes. Behind the venus head is an endless blue and behind the boy is a beige landscape. In the middle an hourglass. It looks like Han was trying to move through time. It is an interesting piece to look at. The weird realistic and flat objects alongside the flat landscape catched my attention.

The next piece I was interested in is Untitled by KWON Youngwoo in 1985.The materials used is white Korean paper blue-gray paint mixed with ink and Gouache. The Gouache is impregnated on the back of the paper in order to seep through. During this time many traditional artists used paper brush and ink, this was known as jipilmuk. The first use of the term “hangukwa” which means Korean painting. This piece caught my attention since it reminded me of abstract art of the west. Interesting enough a group Mungnimhoe (ink Forest Group) were the ones who introduced abstraction. They emphasize that abstraction was not exclusive to the west. I agree with this sentiment. It was cool to see what abstract artists in other countries and cultures were creating. I liked Untitled for its colors, the way the paint drips with streaks at the bottom and the Gouche that seeps through. Upon taking a closer look one can see the paint and the texture it creates on the paper.

Last piece is a color photograph Do Bring Seub by Jo Seub in 2002.  It is a reenactment of the famous protest scene of Lee Hanyeol a victim of the 1987 June Democracy Movement. In the photo the artist is wearing a Red Devils soccer shirt and is bleeding from his head. Instead of just simply reproducing a historical movement it brings it up in a contemporary moment. In this case it was the deaths of two middle school girls by a US Army vehicle. This incident was buried due to the 2002 World Cup craze. Here the artist is critiquing the collectivist culture in Korean society and the 2002 World Cup is a symbol of that. The photograph caught my attention due the pose and colors. I also learned more about Korean history. The collectivism the artist is critiquing is something I heard a lot in many other East Asian countries. Meanwhile in America there are people who debate about individualism in western culture. It made me think that extreme collectivism and extreme individualism are both problems.

The virtual tour was fun to do. As someone who has gone to museums in person many times, both experiences are effective. In a virtual tour I was able to learn and look through the pieces just as well as in person. Since it’s online I can open other tabs and look things up.  While I can do that in person if I have my phone with me, I am more likely to continue to the next piece quicker. It is also very accessible and more people may be willing to check things out since museums can seem overwhelming for some people. On top of that I can look into museums that I cannot go to because of my location. One con however, is that there is a stronger impression in being able to see the pieces in person. Other than that a virtual tour is effective.

I finished adjusting my posts according to the feedback I was given. When it comes to feedback it is from both the Rock app and email. For this reason I am constantly checking my emails to make sure I see the feedback on time. After the adjustments made my design was posted. I was excited to see my post show up on different social media sites. Part of the reason this internship made me nervous was due to the fact that I had not made content for social media. Seeing my work posted and have good feedback from my supervisors is rewarding. This made me more confident and motivated me to push forward. I am glad that I decided to take this challenge.

I was currently finishing up the Given Tuesday post and still working on the World Aids Day post. It seems that working on multiple posts is going to be the norm. I also made a list of minor and major holidays for December and began listing holidays in which I can create posts for. December has many holidays and it is around the corner, I have to make sure they are done early for revision so they can be ready for posting.

I just had a department meeting. Although I was nervous it was fun to meet the other members of the team. During the meeting emphasis was made on meeting deadlines and teamwork. Since we are working on social media, being on time with posts is very important. They also mention not to hesitate to ask for help whether to our supervisor and/or our colleges. We can share and give feedback and even teach others if there isa skill we know of that we can share. This meeting was comforting since, before the start of the internship, I was worried about doing things mostly on my own. Not to mention as a shy person it felt good to hear that it was okay to ask questions and that I do not need to have all the skills.

Blog 8 Ethics

The readings I read on ethics and copyright were interesting and as a designer made me more aware of ethics. I have used images from other artists and credited them. I have also used images from Unplashed, a site where one can get free licensed images.Through an interesting part in the readings is in the AIGA Standards of Professional Practice, under The Designer’s Responsibility to the Public. Especially now in days where misinformation is rampant, I think this is important to take note one. As designers we should be responsible if there is misinformation or even how certain people are portrayed. The point in design is to communicate to the audience, and our design can affect the public therefore having a fair and balanced design is encouraged.

In the case of the Fairey Copyright Hope poster case, Fairey Hope poster should fall under fair use since it is transformative work however he did not do any favors by not being honest in the first place. His ethics during the case was not ideal. When it came to the case he should have been honest in where he got his reference photo in the first place. I am glad that a settlement has been reached but as a designer and a fan of artists and artworks it is worrying thinking of what the courts may have chosen. On one hand I somewhat understand AP since the photo used for reference came from them, but on the other Fairey work is transformative. From the case the original photo did not have any meaning politically speaking. The perspective used is one commonly used for many presidents beforehand. It was a clean classic headshot. AP argued that there was no transformation done. Though in my opinion there is since according to AP policies and Garcia the intent of the photo was not politically motivated. Meanwhile, Fairey is and it seems he did a lot of retouching and changes to emphasize his point. This case was interesting since it is important to give credit but artists should be able have the right to create transformative works. This reminds me of parody and reaction videos done on Youtube that sometimes get involved in cases. It definitely is a blurry line and is an important discussion to make.

Blog 7- Ethics

For Unity for Equality I did not sign a non-disclosure agreement or a confidentiality agreement. Since most of my work is illustration, I do make sure not to copy or trace over other people’s work. I may find inspiration but I have my own concepts. On top of that we are encouraged to work together. If more than one person created a design then they should be credited if more than one wants to demonstrate their work. The logo had recently been redesigned. We were told of the exact colors and look of the logo and what was allowed or not allowed to do.
