Before, the title of my piece was going to be called Section 8. I wanted to explore NYCHA’s (new york city housing authority) responsibility to our building and why it is poorly maintained.
As i continued to talk to my neighbors and get to know more about my building and its history, i have decided to change the title from “Section 8” to “1909”, the name of my building. The reason for this is because while there are issues on the management side, the main issue has to do with our community. i’m learning that back in the day our building was a unified community that cared for each other and their building. What we are seeing today is directly related to how apathetic we have become to the place we call home. ive learned that there is a difference between NYCHA’s responsibility to the building and our responsibility to the building as residents who live here.
