In this section, you will find all the research papers that I have completed in Dental Hygiene school. This gained knowledge has helped me to distinguish the difference in dental anatomy among patients and to realize that every patient’s needs have to be addressed differently, to provide the best dental care possible.

Histology and Embryology:

In the Histology and Embryology paper, I learned about tetracycline stain and what it involves to provide a service to a patient with this condition. Especially, to be able to educate the patient in the best way about this unbecoming aesthetic state.

Dental Radiology:

In the Dental Radiology paper, I was given 2 dental anatomy conditions that any patient can present. I was able to do the proper research and to understand what a dens in dente and dilaceration look like clinically and radiographically and  be able to educate and explain the different dental problems that the patient may face.

Periodontics:

In the Periodontics paper, I was part of a group where we needed to properly plan a dental treatment for a patient with a medical health condition and periodontal disease. I was given the part where the patient has had a kidney replacement one year ago. My contribution was to categorize the patient in the appropriate treatment plan phase and to provide the most optimal care to maintain stable oral health. This project helped me to understand how to guide patients with different medical conditions so that they can achieve a better quality of life.

Motivational Interviewing research project:

For this project, we created a brochure and a poster board to stimulate and motivate people to stop smoking, and to prevent this bad lifestyle turn into a much worse habit.

Oral Pathology:

In the Oral Pathology paper, I chose to  talk about incisive canal cyst and how to recognize if a patient has it. One day in clinic, I was lucky to have a patient who presented with this type of cyst. When I examined the patient, he had a well defined incisive papilla and when I took the radiograph, I confirmed the existence of it. The patient was informed that this is a benign congenital cyst and it has to be monitored to control its growth.
Having the opportunity to experience something that you have been taught in class is very rewarding because it is there when you put all the knowledge gained for the patient’s well-being.

Pharmacology:

In the Pharmacology paper, I researched about a traditional herbal medication called Ma-Huang that many Asians patients may consume.  As a health care provider, it is important to understand the manifestations of these herbal medicines, since they can have oral effects. Also, every patient reacts differently to the effects of this sympathomimetic that can excite the Nervous System. Therefore, I must be alert to the reactions and behavior that a patient may have to help minimize the risks of any unforeseen event.
