Journal # 7 Mentorship

During my time here at Eventive has been an eventful experience. The staff here has a great sense of humor. You’ll always hear someone laughing or cracking a joke, but when it comes to mentorship or looking for one it’s not so easy. The reason why I say this is because everyone is in their own heads thinking whether or not the client was satisfied or not so initially mentoring someone is not in their best of interest right now.

Luckily you might find someone who is willing to sacrifice their time to help coach you  to become knowledgeable of the mentee’s surroundings, and I was lucky enough to have my supervisior whom which is the creative director to take the time out of his busy work schedule to speak to me for 30 mins every Wednesday to see how I’m doing, sharing his work to get an idea of how to better conceptualize  something while trying to pick my brain on what I want to improve on and achieve during this internship. I absolutely appreciate him for being supportive and understanding of me making the transition once I’ve graduated.

He has taught me to control my nervous actions when presenting in front of everyone. There are times when I  do find the confidence to speak to an audience, and not freeze up and there are times when I just completely shut down and go completely blank. I’m going to get that under control, but you never get rid of your nervousness because it’s what makes your presentation  energetic and genuine.

Journal # 6 Self evaluation

So far during these past three weeks, I’ve learned that yes, I am capable of doing great work, but my speed and agility to come up with something in a small turn around time is minimal. Meaning I’m not as fast, but I’ll get the work done well. My main problem is not liking to show something unfinished instead of the finished product. Even though I’m proud of the work I produced my speed needs to catch up as well. One specific project that is a prime example of this situation was taking on the task of producing a design for the agencies screen saver for there mantra ( Communication, Collaboration, innovation and representation) I brainstorm out a comp through sketches  and went with the direction of hand lettering the words out, sadly it didn’t work out as intended. I finally came up with a solution to make an animation, but that again didn’t work out because the agency couldn’t  use a 3rd party app on there server to make a video screen saver so I had to degrade my work into stills so it can transition to the next page. This project that could’ve taken me two days but it  took me four days.  It was not what I intended it to be. The work came out beautifully as it’s simple and easy to read. I know that in due time my stamina will increase as each project is given to me to grow and challenge myself.

Journal # 5 Feat. Interns

Currently, I’m working with my team of three other interns that consist of ( two account management, strategy interns) and the four me being the only creative. This is an intern project that required us to rebrand Eventive Marketing social media platforms ( Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and a blog post)that will post meaningful content that will possibly gain a wider audience of new biz or general growth in follows. The strategy and account interns worked side by side to create a shell ( Content calendar) of a topic we could post in an ordered schedule.

We’re still in the brainstorming stage and we mostly meet up in person for an hour a day to see how we’re progressing. Our deadline is in within four weeks, but we have to show something to the marketing team to show where our head is at. My part in this is to gather the data they collected from other competitor companies, use those key insight as inspiration for the design of what will be on Eventives social media channels I will create a mood board so that the team can see what best Eventives image/brand. This project my first collaborative project and it is premature so there isn’t much to say about our complete direction, but I will say this which is our communication. It is flowing like butter on bread.

Journal # 4 Performance on a typical day

Advertising and design is my major under communication design but at my internship, I’m learning more design that’s conceptual to attract a particular audience group. Since this agency specializes in brand activations for target groups to learn about a particular brand and interact with it through design is within the realm of advertising even though I’m not doing a 360 campaign. But, I work closely and shadow my supervisor whom which is the creative director as he articulates and comes up with various concepts to show clients what the team is thinking in terms of creative direction.

I’m learning a little more about how relationships are formed with creative and clients to harmoniously create beautiful work with open communication. I’m present at most meetings to catch up on the latest update with a specific account to try to understand the ask of the client’s intentions/ vision to make it better for them and their consumers. My enthusiasm to get my hands on each client brief such as Cigna, Corning glass which I’ve currently worked on during my first two weeks here has made me mentally aware of what is expected in short turn around time.

I’m currently working on an in-house design for the agency sleep screen design on the monitors, the wallpapers will be customized using their brand color, logo, Hand lettering and body copy from their brand shared values that will recycle the animation as long as the screen is in sleep mode, But the main purpose of this is to get more  exposed  to better conceptualize ideas that create impactful experiences. I still have a way to go until I’m fully confident enough to brainstorm meaningful ideas to pitch.

Journal # 3 The Eventive Culture

The culture at Eventive Marketing is youthful and easy going with its staff. One thing that I do enjoy is that there’s happy hour every other Friday to celebrate a successful week. My agency dress code is dressy casual, not really the usual button-down shirt with a tie and a suit, But I enjoy wearing a simple professional outfit which includes a button-down shirt with black pants and shiny slip-on shoes. The typical workspace area for employees working there is a semi-open desk workspace in the main area of the floor just for account services and the marketing team. This is also where all the interns sit to do work at a tempory little round table since we’re moving on the 22nd of June. The creative and strategy team have their own rooms with individual desk space. While accommodating our shared floor with three other agencies the work days does get a little hectic around Wednesday-Friday afternoon. Meetings are very frequent around these times as well, as workers become rigorous our minds need to refuel on food for lunch which most of the floor goes out for lunch and eat outside on the sky lounge to destress and get some fresh air while enjoying their lunch before getting back to work. lastly, the hours are from 9am-6pm, but the day doesn’t start until 9:30 am.

Journal#2 Where do I fit in the equation?

The role I’ve taken for the rest of my internship is creative and with that responsibility, I would help the creative team with there workload from client designs. When there’s a new client pitch I composite a deck with already giving context from account and strategy teams so all I would have to do design mood boards to potentially inspire clients to want more from us. The title that supervisor currently has is the creative director’s position. With that being said how did I came to obtain this internship is through the AD Club of NY which is an organization for students to broaden their network base with recruiting agencies Which I luckily did with Eventive Marketing which was my second choice besides Rauxa.

During the interview process it was only through phone, once I found out I was apart of the 2018 summer AD Club interns my portfolio and CV was sent out from the coordinating Ericka Riggs whom I grew a business relationship for almost two years and was forwarded to the various agency members recruiting talent.  What was amazing was the callbacks for interviews from Elephant, Bullish, Rauxa, and Eventive that I schedule for a phone interview with one person HR  two or one days apart with a maximum time of 45 minutes on the phone. Eventive Marketing gladly took a chance with me then giving me the confirmation a week later. The question that was asked was  “what made me go into the field of advertising?” “Who Inspired  you?” “Why Art direction?” and lastly, ” what are you looking for in an agency?”

Journal #1 An Eventful first day

The company that I’m working with as an intern for the summer is Eventive Marketing which is located at 437 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10022 that houses 11-50 employees. Currently, the company is private hoping to become public as it’s under many subsectors of the Omnicom family. Event marketing is an experiential agency that brings brand activations to life for their client’s audience which they’ve worked with closely such as ( PNC Mortgage, NFL, UFC, Cigna and many more.) They’ve just obtained a new account from Cigna and I’m currently working with the creative team as a creative on the project brief. I’ve just completed the first round of designs that I art directed to present to the client this following week. What was asked of me was to design a Marathon shirt design that uses Cigna brand colours in a newer and fresher way than before since the color blue was used intensely. The shirt was also supposed to represent the Marine Corps Marathon using their logo along with Cigna. To get back onto the topic of discussion, Eventive Marketing was founded in 1992. There was one article that mostly discusses briefly what challenges Eventive had to overcome with NFL client. The interview was written down word for word as the interviewer ask the president basically how much planning and precision it takes to create a functional brand experience & the answer to that was ” Critical brainstorming as a whole agency and careful wordsmithing with strategy to then, carry out a tangible interactive execution done by Creative/ Production.”

PSA:I have not taken any picture of the agency inside because they’re in midst of moving into the TBWA building. Until then stay tuned as I’ll be getting my desk real soon!

Jamar Callender Project 2 #Getoutthevote

Within the short amount of time we had it seemed a bit chaotic at first because ideas weren’t popping up as fast as I wanted to be for the 2016 election. Maybe because we have the most unreliable candidates that’s not even worth brainstorming ideas for in the first place. Anyways Getting getting back to my “Get out the vote” sponsored by AIGA. My topic was solely on #blacklivesmatter mainly because we still deal with racism on a daily bases and killings of our brothers and sisters in America. I’m not saying All lives should matter because they do! But at the very moment the African American race is always at large or a target in this country. So in order for all lives to matter one race or any other race should not be treated like an outcast. My idea was to show faces of different ethnicity peeling away showing a black man at the very end. This goes to show that no matter how much you peel away there’s alway going to be a human being underneath each pigment of skin.
