Community Service/ Outreach Activities

Service-Learning Project (March 2025) :

As part of a service-learning project, our small group of dental hygiene students recently partnered with a local third-grade classroom to deliver an interactive oral hygiene lesson. We focused on three key areas: proper brushing techniques, emphasizing the importance of a two-minute brushing session and covering all tooth surfaces; the connection between diet and oral health, highlighting the impact of sugary drinks and snacks on tooth decay; and the recommended frequency of dental visits, stressing the importance of regular checkups and cleanings for preventative care. The experience was incredibly rewarding, not only for the opportunity to educate young children about a crucial aspect of their well-being, but also for the chance to develop our own communication and teaching skills within a real-world setting. The enthusiasm and engagement of the students made the project a truly fulfilling one.

Head-Start School: Initial Steps Child Development Center (April 2025) :

As a class in our dental hygiene program, we recently embarked on a valuable service-learning experience at the Head-Start School: Initial Steps Child Development Center. Our visit focused on educating three- and four-year-old children about oral hygiene, conducting oral screenings to assess their current dental health, and applying fluoride varnish to help prevent cavities. This hands-on experience was incredibly educational, it allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting and develop crucial patient interaction skills with a young and often apprehensive population. I’ve gained firsthand insights into providing dental care to preschoolers, enhancing effective communication techniques and age-appropriate preventative strategies. This experience solidified the importance of early intervention in preventative dentistry as well as commitment to community health.

Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) (May 2025) :

“Give Kids a Smile” is a service event designed to improve the oral health of children in the pediatric population. The event takes place at a dental hygiene program clinic where children receive comprehensive dental care. This includes a thorough dental prophylaxis, a professional cleaning that removes plaque and tartar, and crucial home care instruction. The goal is not only to provide immediate oral health improvements but also to empower children and their families with the knowledge and skills to maintain healthy smiles for years to come. By offering these services in a fun and welcoming environment, we aim to make a positive impact on the oral health of our community’s youngest members and foster positive attitudes toward dental care from a young age.
