Graphic Design – Living Room

Process

This project involved creating a triptych inspired by the work of Mary Sully, consisting of an inspiration image, a symmetrical abstract design, and a tessellating pattern. We began by selecting and editing a high-quality location image in Photoshop, adjusting its size, format, and color mode.

We then analyzed key visual elements from the image and developed an abstract, mirrored composition that emphasized balance and simplification. Finally, we created a repeating pattern in Illustrator that related visually and conceptually to the other designs. All three pieces were assembled in InDesign into a cohesive, print-ready layout.

Final Design Assets

The final piece is a unified triptych featuring the edited inspiration image, a symmetrical abstract design, and a complementary tessellating pattern. Each element is formatted consistently and works together to create a cohesive visual presentation.

Impact

This project improved our ability to follow detailed technical guidelines while applying creative thinking. It strengthened our skills in abstraction and reinforced the importance of maintaining visual consistency across multiple designs.

Reflection

We learned how to simplify complex imagery into essential forms while keeping a strong connection between designs. Balancing variation and cohesion was a key challenge. With more time, we would further refine the relationships between elements and explore additional pattern variations.
