Invitation to Teach a Special Topics ID Course, deadline 4/30/18

From Provost August

Dear Colleagues:

Please consider the following invitation from the ID Committee:

In the interest of expanding our offerings of existing Gen Ed interdisciplinary Special Topics courses, full-time faculty members are invited to propose and develop a new syllabus to teach an existing special topics ID course.

Five Special Topics ID courses have been approved by governance. The course list can be found on the Interdisciplinary Committee website on Open Lab at: https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/ids/current-courses/special-topics-courses/

These courses were designed so that the learning outcomes could be met using a range of disciplines, emphases, texts, and course materials. For example, a chemist, biologist, or physicist could present the science in Science in the Kitchen, and activities might include an emphasis on a variety of ingredients or processes. Another example is Learning Places: Understanding the City (LIB/ARCH 2205ID) which has been taught by faculty in Hospitality Management and Humanities, offering urban studies, tourism, and theater perspectives on the city.

To be eligible, faculty members must not have already taught the proposed interdisciplinary special topics course. Inquiries are welcome from faculty members seeking a co-teacher.

Courses should be designed to be co-taught by two (or more) faculty members, and the use of open educational resources is encouraged. The proposed course syllabus will be due one week before the start of classes on August 27, 2018. A $1,500 stipend will be offered to faculty who propose new course syllabi and who make a one-year commitment to co-teach the course in the Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 semesters.

The deadline for submission is Monday, April 30, 2018. Reviews will be completed and acceptances announced by May 15. A maximum of three new syllabus proposals (6 proposers) will be considered. A mandatory workshop on developing course syllabi for the interdisciplinary special topics courses is scheduled for Thursday, May 31, from 1–4 PM.

Please send proposals and inquires to Dr. Reneta D. Lansiquot, rlansiquot@citytech.cuny.edu.
