Nutrition and Dental Education at Child Daycare Center

Our group visited a Child Daycare Center for nutrition and oral health education. The project was challenging because the group members had to decide together on the target, method, and location. Our group first decided on the target group. Since all of the group members liked children, we agreed to target young children and decided to provide oral health education as well as nutritional education to young children. All group members worked together to find a Child Daycare location that would allow training, and by meeting with the person in charge, we were able to decide on the direction of training. Each person decided on their own role and worked hard to create educational poster and PowerPoint presentations, and provided oral health education to children.

Since our target was 4-5 year olds, we focused on keeping the education time no longer than 30 minutes and tried to make it short and have a strong impact. PowerPoint was also created with a focus on pictures rather than text, and efforts were made to increase concentration by using videos. After the presentation was over, we had time to practice brushing teeth together using the prepared typodont and had a time of interaction. Personally, I was most proud and happy during this time.

Although it was a short period of time, it was a rewarding time because we were able to provide oral health education and nutritional health education to young children. I was proud to think that I could have a positive impact on the Brooklyn community as a dental hygiene student. In particular, I was very proud of the fact that all members of our group worked together from the beginning of the project to the preparation process to achieve it one by one.

I introduce our project through the materials below!

Outreach Activities

Head Start Outreach Dental Health Education Program

The entire class worked together to conduct Head Start outreach targeting young children. In my case, I had just finished a group project that involved providing oral health education to young children, so I was able to proceed with ease and without being nervous. To get the children attention, we started the education with simple questions like “What is your favorite food?” and “How many times a day do you brush your teeth?”. After that, we continued to distract the children by watching videos. Afterwards, we taught them how to brush their teeth using a doll model and had time to communicate with the children through questions and answers.

I think everyone in the group played their roles well. Although it was a short period of time, I was proud to be able to contribute to the local community as a dental hygiene student.
