  1. This article stated that the title “sommelier” has changed the meaning over time. In the wine industry, sommelier always means wine steward, who has been well-trained, and has great knowledge about wine. However, nowadays this word has been replaced by the meaning like expert and specialist. The new trend of having a water sommelier and mustard sommelier may be quiet disturbing to the wine industry. In extend, the fast-food chain Sonic’s new commercial has been quiet disrespectful. The action of mocking a sommelier was very inappropriate. But back to the reality, I believed the title “sommelier” will soon be replaced by “director of wine” in the new generation.

  2. In this informative and important article titled Why Is the Word “Sommelier” Being Co-opted? by Jennifer Fiedler it is evident that the word “Sommelier” is commonly used to express the meaning of a wine expert. However after reading the article I find it interesting that many other experts from olive oil, mustard, water, and the list goes on have adopted this word “Sommelier” within their expertise. This is a great change for a proper word. I think that is it meant for wine experts however it is a blessing to have a word that means expert without using the word expert. It sounds classy and it definitely puts on a persona that no other word can. I think this is refreshing and tasteful for those who are experts in other fields aside from wine. We will always know where the word “Sommelier” came from and what it is known for although I think letting it be used with other experts is inviting and gives a nice tittle than just mustard expert where as adding the mustard “Sommelier” makes it sound more pleasing. This article was enjoyable to read because it showed change and in my opinion I personally think that this is a great thing.

  3. This article is talking about the word “sommelier ” being co-opted. Sommelier is a person who is expert in wine. But these days word sommelier is being widely used in restaurant industry in different version. For instace, water sommelier ,mustard sommelier ,whisky sommelier and so on. Anybody expert in anything is considered sommelier . Like if someone is expert in sake can be called as sake sommelier .i personally think its totally ok to say either an wine steward ,wine expert or specialist or sommelier or wine director which has the same meaning.

  4. This article about sommelier states that the definition of the word has changed numerous times over the years. In the hospitality industry a sommelier is a person who has knowledge on wine and are also well trained. There’s many types of sommelier. As written in the article, “In Ray’s and Stark Bar they had hired a water sommelier for its 45 page water menu. And then, a cascade of sommelier followed in 2014: … a stateside course for becoming an olive oil sommelier.” Based on this article I think a sommelier is a person who mastered anything in this industry. For example, a wine sommelier should have all the knowledge on wine an should be able to help a guest with pairing or knowing what meals should be paired with either a red wine or white wine. Some think that the word belongs to just the wine servers but I think that a sommelier could even be used for a restaurant thats well known for cheeses that they serve and etc..

  5. This article talks basically about the Word “Sommelier”. The traditional role of the sommelier is one based on service. As defined by Wikipedia: “A sommelier or wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing.

The role is much more specialized and informed than that of a wine waiter: In fine dining today the role is strategically on a par with that of the executive chef or chef de cuisine.” It’s a role for someone who not only loves wine, but also loves food and restaurants and is passionate about facilitating the best possible marriage of the two for guests.
What being a sommelier is not pushing your own creative agenda on guests or just creating a list based on your favorite obscure wines.
It’s about compiling selections that complement the cuisine and make people happy.
