Deven Guerrero: NYT Travel Section Assignment #2

In this weeks article, ‘ā€˜Star Warsā€™: Coming to a Theme Park Near You,Ā The New York Times exposes information on Ā ā€œStar Warsā€ theme park attractions, custom jets and a related museums that are being innovated today.Ā The seventh film in the ā€œStar Warsā€ franchise, ā€œStar Wars: The Force Awakens,ā€ will release this December, and so far,Ā Disney announced that it will build ā€œStar Warsā€-themed areas at two of its parks, Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. TheĀ Japanese airline, ANA, will launch three planes which will internally and externally mimic a Star War character, R2D2. TheĀ  Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will soon be built in Chicago and will expose cinematic and beautiful art reflecting the Star Wars series.

I believe that the innovation of these ideas will result in large profits for owners and investors. Star Wars originated in 1977, and according to wikipedia, it’s franchise is worth over 30 billion dollars. Not only will fans of the new movie “Star Wars:The Force Awakens,” attend these major attractions, but Star War fans from the 90’s (when the first seasons began) will be interested in attending as well.

Deven Guerrero- NYT Travel Section Assignment #1

In this weeks travel section, the Ā New York Times published the article, Ā ‘Chef Jose Andres giving and getting back in Haiti’, which talks about a 46 year old, chef and owner of Ā 21 restaurants, Jose Andres, providing and increasing stability for the Haitian civilization. Ever since the earthquake occurred in 2010, Mr.Andres has been exploring Haiti and is now host of a one hour special PBS show, “Undiscovered: Haiti with Jose Andres.” With this show, Mr. Andres is aiming to Ā increase international awareness and make people view the island of Haiti as a place to explore and tour in, instead of viewing it as a place where there’s immense poverty and damage due to the earthquake. Mr. Andres established a non for profit association, “World Central Kitchen,” which teaches Haitians smart hunger solutions such as, culinary techniques to feed themselves, and ways to preserve forest, farming, and fishing industries.

I’m inspired by Mr. Andres because what he’s achieving is what my dream consists of, and that is, Ā providing for the needy and feeding the hungry. I’m ecstatic on how Mr. Andres uses his culinary experience to open a non for profit just to teach others about food and culinary arts. His ambition to benefit Haiti will raise awareness and hopefully the island of Haiti can be viewed as a beautiful place to visit instead of the place where the earthquake in 2010 devastated all.

Reflection of me – Deven Guerrero

Hello, my name is Deven Guerrero and I am 21 years of age. Since young, Iā€™ve always asked myself, ā€œWhat career do I want to pursue when I become older?ā€ Being born and raised in New York, I am familiar with the opportunities and itā€™s something that I, as a student should take advantage of. At New York City Tech, Iā€™m seeking to expand my knowledge, personally and academically. Not only to become a better student, nor to only improve the path of becoming a present and future industry leader, but to enhance lives of others around the world.

Iā€™m currently majoring in Hospitality and Management, and as a student at City Tech, my academic goal is to learn and expand my knowledge within that field. The more I learn within the field, the more options Iā€™ll have to decide what I really want to do. Main reason I chose this major is due to my passion for learning about how large industries bring in revenue, implement their businesses, and most of all, my interest in culinary arts. Iā€™ve always been interested in business and marketing for several reason. My dad owns his own business which I work for, and Iā€™m aspired to be someone like him in the future in a business perspective. This personal experience in business will allow me to understand business in the hotel industry as well. For the past three years, Iā€™ve developed a passion for cooking and since then, Iā€™ve improved my culinary arts at home by helping my mother cook, and watching the Food Network. After realizing how much I love to cook, the hospitality and management major was right for me because it will help me specialize my skills in culinary arts. Before entering City Tech, I was a student at BMCC and my major was computer networks. I recently received an associateā€™s degree under that major when I completed my first two years of college. Main reason I didnā€™t continue taking Computer Networks at City Tech is because I wasnā€™t passionate about it and itā€™s something I couldnā€™t see myself doing long term. I chose that major at first because I had industry connections and because of the money tech specialists make yearly. Now, Iā€™ve learned that I should always strive to pursue a career in something I am interested in, disregarding funds and connections.

As a present industry leader, I see myself improving other lives. My short term career goals as an industry leader is to own a restaurant with a high end restaurant in it. I would love to manage my own hotel business, along as providing a menu of my specialty dishes for a high end restaurant in the hotel. By pursuing this, not only will I be able to master my skills in managing a business and mastering culinary arts, but I can spread culinary, and business knowledge amongst young and future leaders. Iā€™ve developed this interest of enhancing other lives because it is a reflection of who I am. I enjoy helping others, seeing people happy, and thatā€™s something that makes me happy as well. My reflection of who I am will enhance my professional attributes and will allow me to do what I love to do best, and that is, improve the livings of others financially and help them enhance what they love to do.

Itā€™s difficult to determine where Iā€™ll be in the future, but becoming a future industry leader is something Iā€™m currently striving for. My understanding of a ā€œfuture industry leaderā€ draws an image in my mind of a 40 year old me being this leader. As a future industry leader, I see myself achieving one of my dream goals, and thatā€™s to open up a non for profit to provide for the homeless around the world. Hopefully, by then, Iā€™ll have several restaurants, and hotels to provide enough funds to accomplish my main goal in life.

In conclusion, Iā€™ve always asked, ā€œWhat do I want to become in the future?ā€ The answer to that is through education and my passion for learning will help me pursue that. As a student at City tech, my main goal is to learn as much as I can in life for wisdom. As a present and future industry leader, I look forward to becoming someone who will not only make enough funds to provide for my own family, but to provide for the homeless around the world. I also look forward to becoming someone with great knowledge and wisdom to spread amongst others and improve the way we live as a society today.
