Project 1 – Data Visualization Experiment

<<back to Weekly Agenda

Overview

Inspired by >>Stefanie Posavec and Georgia Lupi’s Dear Data Project, for Project 1, we explore information design by looking to our class, collecting relevant data about who we are, and then trying to visualize that data in a meaningful (and beautiful) way. In the process, we will get to know each other better. The survey will serve as an introduction to each other and this course.

Part 1

1. Add your information to the spreadsheet Survey:

1. Once everyone in the class has added their information, download the >> SimpleClassSurvey-DataExcelSheet spreadsheet and edit the data entries as needed to ā€˜clarify’ (simplify) the data

Part 2

Data Visualizations Sketches: using sketch paper create 2 – 3 data visualization sketches that represent the ‘SimpleClassSurvey’ spreadsheet. Make sure you represent all students in the class and at least three of the variables (column labels). Also sketch a legend to go on the back side of postcard that explains all symbols and color used to represent data:

1. Get some sketch paper, draw a border to show the dimensions and edges of the postcard (horizontal or vertical).

2. Start sketching ideas. Use color and symbols to distinguish different data sets (i.e.: Location, COMD – Concentration and Program) and create meaning. Think about how to direct viewers eye through principles of design: hierarchy, sequence, contrast, foreground/background, scale, etc.

3. For inspiration look at: the data diaries:  >>Stefanie Posavec and Georgia Lupi’s Dear Data Project (see 2 videos below)

4. Have fun – be free!

Part 3

We will look at sketches at the beginning of class next week, critique them, and then you will render the final postcard in class. Bring colors to class. I will provide a postcard.

  • Edit design based on in class critique, disucssion and feedback
  • Using provided postcards:
    • Render final Data Visualization on Post Card 1
    • Render final legend to go on Post Card 2 (the back side) that explains all symbols and color used to represent data

Instructions

  1. In the WordPress Dashboard, click on the tab Posts > Add New to create a new post
  2. Create a NEW POST on OpenLab class site and name it:
    “YourName: Discussions – DataViz”
  3. Add the relevant Category (choose from the existing list). Under the GEAR to the right of the screen GO to DOCUMENT>CATEGORIES, then check the following categories:Ā “Discussions” and “DataViz”
  4. Upload your two images into your media library and name them “YourName_DataViz-front / back”
  5. Each image should have a caption, that briefly describes your DataViz
  6. Click Save Draft for later or click Publish to publish immediately.

Adding Images

How to add images to OpenLab

From your mobile device
ā€œImage Sizeā€ app Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.vsmedia.imagesize&hl=en_US
ā€œImage Sizeā€Ā  IOS App StoreĀ  https://apps.apple.com/us/app/image-size/id670766542 Ā

Resize Images in OpenLab
Most digital cameras and  phones are likely to be set to take images that are vastly larger than a user of a computer screen is likely to need
