  • how to update an uploaded document

We’ve posted some documents (mostly PDFs) to our site by using the “Upload/Insert” links on the edit page area and then adding the documents to the Media Library. Occasionally we want to post an updated version of a document (for example, making corrections to a PDF). Unfortunately, we can’t seem to replace the existing document with a new version. Currently we are deleting the old document and uploading the new one — this is inconvenient in that the new document is assigned a new URL, and it breaks the links that we have inserted in various pages around the site. Any suggestions? An example is the Review Sheet here: http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/mat1175fa2011/files/2011/09/2011FallMAT1175-Exam1Review.pdf

The only solution I can think of Jonas, is to not have the page a direct link, but rather post the document to a page (as Maria has here: http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/den1114/lecture-2-tissues/). Perhaps slightly less elegant than your solution, but when the pdf is hosted on the page, and the page keeps the same url even if the pdf changes.

As always, if anyone else has a better solution, please share!

    Best,

I’m afraid that’s a little outside my knowledge base too, Danny. Let me move this to a new thread and see if we can’t get someone to help us.

    Best,
    Scott

    Hi Dan
If you mean WebSupport 1 then pick Doug’s brain – he’s the one who told me about it.

An update on updating documents in the media library — the library automatically assigns a URL based on the month and the document name. I’ve found that if I delete a document, and then re-upload a new version with the same name, then it is assigned the same URL (so I don’t need to update site links). Of course this only works if I’m uploading the new version in the same month that I uploaded the old version.
