MEDU 3002: Methods of Teaching Secondary School Mathematics

This course focuses on the implications of research on mathematical teaching and learning for creating effective mathematics classroom environments. Our inquiry centers on students’ understanding of mathematics, how they learn, and what this implies for the design of lessons, unit planning, adaptation of curriculum materials, assessment practices, and differentiation.
We will explore these topics through readings, classroom observations, lesson planning, teaching demonstrations, analysis, roundtable discussions, and collaborative reflection.
Particular attention is given to issues of diversity and equity, including the needs of individual learners such as English language learners and students with disabilities or special health needs. The course also emphasizes effective group instruction strategies, the development of literacy in the mathematics classroom, the roles of the teacher, and both curriculum and lesson planning.
In addition, the course engages with key standards and frameworks that guide mathematics teaching and learning, including the NYS Learning Standards for Mathematics, Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, the NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework, and the NYS Code of Ethics.
The course includes a total of 25 clock hours of observation of mathematics teaching and learning in high school settings.
