Course Description

Description:
This course will explore the importance of visual thinking in communication design. Students will exercise
their image making techniques and learn to use graphic elements to communicate concepts and ideas.
The course will emphasize the integration of communication concepts, graphics and its relationship to creating clear messages to audience and client from thumbnails to final presentation.

Requirements for the course:
Steps of project process, from concept meetings, thumbnail sketches, roughs, comps to finished presentations and final approved work will be the structure of the class. Students will have two weeks for the first formal class critique and two weeks following for final revision and grading. Electronic work at 300 dpi only accepted.

Grading based upon each stage for evaluation:
Process: Understanding steps and procedures used in professional design.
Assessment: Each student is responsible for thumbnail, rough and comprehensive sketches through to
final work.
Concept: Learning the nature of clever imagery in professional design.
Assessment: Combining ideographic and pictographic images without typographic use to tell the whole story.
Craft: Learning the importance of quality imagery and presentation in professional design.
Assessment: Use of high resolution graphics. Students may use photographs, scans of natural materials, hand made art or vector art. All must be their original work.
Punctuality: Learning the importance of production deadlines for the appropriate professional to client relationship.
Assessment: Students will be graded on submission of each step in the process at deadline.

Student goals:
Lab work, homework assignments and critiques will insure students will
– have an understanding of the production steps required to make a promotional graphic.
– have an understanding of the conventional and digital tools available to designers.
– be able to explore various dynamic page layout approaches.
– be able to recognize and use conceptual thinking rather than copy and paste ideas.
– be able to critique presentations with insightful analysis and constructive response to the work and its presentation.
– have an awareness of project pacing and commitment to deadlines.
– be able to discuss and critique their work using a growing field vocabulary.
– be able to demonstrate an understanding of terms and processes appropriate to individual projects.
