Type on the Third Dimension. Type on a box: additional samples of type on a cube- experimental and practical applications on architecture and signage.

Session 1: 03/11/2025

  1. Transfer your ligatures sketches to Illustrator using the template below. Make multiple versions of it. Explore different placements of ligatures on the cube.

Materials:

  • Tracing Paper
  • Sketchbook
  • Ruler
  • Glue Stick
  • Sketch Pens/Pencils
  • Scissors

Technical

  • Cut and assemble the cube; experiment with different versions. I will explain in class how to transfer the image.

Preparation 

  • Using the assembled hand-made cube, transfer and refine the design to the computer.

Homework:

  • Print at least 1 black and white on Cardstock. You can print from Remsen, FedEx, and/or staples. Cut and assemble one of the version to bring in class on Friday.

Session 2: 03/14/2025

  • Photograph with the phone against a neutral background. Photograph all angles
  • Choose a color palette and print at least 3 versions on the cube on regular paper.

Homework

  • If modifications are needed, make them, and evaluate the strength of the design.
  • Once that’s done, transfer the information to the design on the computer, make a PDF and send to print, again on cardstock.
  • Print 1 Color Version on Cardstock, cut it and assemble it.
  • Trim carefully, assemble it. gluing the flaps together, and carefully filling in the edges to give a clean corner.
