Good lighting

IMG_1994-1The reason i like this photo is because of the subjects facial expression. She has a natural smile which was hard to obtain because you need to make your subject laugh so it wouldn’t look fake or forced. Also the lighting makes it look as if she’s glowing. It doesn’t overshadow her face theres a good amount of light used to smoothen her facial features.

Q1.When and why would you as an art director or a photographer chose traditional portrait lighting with a main light, fill and background light for a portrait?

Well art directors or even photographers use different types of lightning depending on the mood or surrounding environment. When hearing the words traditional portrait first thing that pops into my head is school photos.Where the photographers places light on the sides and in the back to get like a glowing affect behind your head.

Q2.when and why would you as an art director or a photographer chose side light for a portrait? Are there any disadvantages to side light?

Side light makes the face look like a black and white cookie almost because one side is dark from no light while the other has light on it.It is an effect used to show dramatic facial impressions or  intense emotions to engage the viewers.

Q3.When and why would you  as an art director or a photographer chose front light for a portrait? Are there any disadvantages to front light?

Front light is the easiest angle to work with because the light is pointed directly at you.Meaning theres no shadows to show depth. Its very common and is used when  taking family portraits group photos. The camera just aims, shoots and catches the still life subject.

Q4.When and why would you as an art director or a photographer decide to use wide angle distortion in a portrait?

It helps you catch a person or object appear larger than it is and sharpens the image.Depending on the lens which determines the depth of field you can get a full length photo of a person body making their body look distorted.Meaning one part of their body looks bigger than the other.
