Week 4 – Portraits

A traditional 3 light portrait is done by using key light, fill light and background light. Key light is used to bring out the main darks and lights in the portrait. It was used to make the triangle in the models face. Fill light is used by the reflector to lighten the shadows. Background light is made by using a light to reflect the backdrop. It’s used to separate the background from the model.

I chose this photo because it not only uses the shadow technique that we learned today, but it has a great fill and tightness. I love that the focus is on his eyes, and most of his face is soft, not sharp. The shadow and highlight is also great. It creates a strong triangle.
