36 Hours on Brooklyn Water Front

by Ayako Hiratsuka

New York is the most popular city for tourists to visit in the world in 2012. Brooklyn, which is a borough of New York, is developing recently. Especially, Brooklyn water front has been renovated by the government and local people. However, the area of Brooklyn water front still has many historical backgrounds and places. Historical tourism refers to a kind of tourism, where the tourist or tour groups focuses on the history; history of some place, people, thing, or events. Tourists can visit those historical important places to know about the culture, tradition, and past happening and get to know about the evolution and development in culture around Brooklyn water front. Recommend to go here during spring or fall.

Friday
     1. Drink Up Brooklyn | 6 p.m.
Always, Brooklyn has been a haven for immigrants and businessmen. Thanks to immigration from Germany in 19th Century, Brooklyn, along with cities like St. Louis and Milwaukee with large German populations, became one of America’s foremost brewing centers in the 1800s. There were about 48 breweries in Brooklyn one hundred years ago. However, the number of breweries decreased due to change of laws and other issues. In 1984, Steve Hindy and Tom Potter founded The Brooklyn Brewery with their limited sources. Their first goal was to bring good beer back to New York City. Now it is one of the famous fantastic beer company in New York. Before you go there, you would take some food from neighbor restaurants or food trucks in Williamsburg. Upon arrival, taste about ten varieties of Brooklyn beer with your food. ($5/drink or $20/5drinks) Brooklyn Lager that was the first beer is a must.
     2. Jewelry on the East River | 7 p.m.
After sunset, cities are lightened; otherwise, last ferry in the day leaves the harbor in Williamsburg around 8 p.m. (Depend on the season.) Ride on the ferry to go to Dumbo.($4) After the ferry left, enjoy the night scene on both the East river sides. This is New York. In the past, there was no transportation to go over the east river. When the river was frozen in the winter season, some people might walk on the river. Due to Industry and Technology developments, we can enjoy bright cities on the ferry.
     3. Feel Music | 8 p.m.
Prefer to listen to real music, go to Bargemusic. (Usually $35) Bargemusic was founded in 1976 by Mark Peskanov and was built in 1899 serving as a working vessel for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in the New York Harbor, delivering hand-loaded sacks of coffee before being brought by Olga Bloom. Usually every Thursday to Sunday, music events are held. It looks a ferry outside but inside of the hall is very classic and old-fashioned. Now is time to feel fantastic music with a night view in Downtown Manhattan; it is romantic.

Jacques Torres, known as Mr. Chocolate, is an excellent pastry chef. In 1986, he became the youngest pastry chef in history to earn the Best Craftsman of France medal in pastry arts. His hot chocolate that won an award named chocolate bon bons. All ingredients are high quality and natural. Mr. Chocolate‘s passion and dream are all in his chocolate arts. Pick some assorted chocolate boxes as souvenirs for your friends and take some food; for cold season, hot chocolate ($3.54), and for summer, one scoop of homemade ice cream ($3.30) are the best choices.
     5. Walking Tour | 9:30 a.m.
Brooklyn Bridge is the oldest cable stayed bridge in New York. This bridge was symbolized a connection between Manhattan and Brooklyn; due to this bridge, Brooklyn became a part of New York. Before that, Brooklyn was an independent city. The bridge was designed by German immigrant John Augustus Roebling and completed by his son, Washington Roebling, in 1883. It was the first steel-wire suspension bridge and was dubbed “Eighth Wonder of the World”. Walking or cycling on the Brooklyn Bridge will be an effective activity to know more about its history and also enjoy the view. Watch the side of Manhattan Bridge. There is a carousel on the Brooklyn water front; Jane’s Carousel was made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1922. It has classic 3 row machines and 48 horses in a pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel. Jane Walentas, who are residents of Brooklyn, bought it at an auction in 1984 and fixed it in Dumbo for about 27 years. Finally, it is located on between Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. If you ride on the horse and touch it, you may feel this historical background more. ($2)

     6. New York bite| Noon
While you go inside of the city from Brooklyn Bridge Park, you may see a long line in front of a white building. This place is very famous for the coal brick-oven pizza. This restaurant was opened in 1991. It changed the location at least once. Regular pizza that recipe is originally from 1941 is reasonable and also tasty. ($14) American-Italian food with a local bottle of beer makes you satisfied. After you bite, you would feel their quality and history. Sometimes need to wait for an hour. If you need to wait an hour to eat there, change your mind and try to look for the Carl’s steaks food truck. Cheesy steaks roll is available to get and bite in Dumbo accidentally. This original restaurant opened in 2003 and it provides food in the Yankees stadium. Either pizza or cheese steaks roll is a New York style bite.

See how Brooklyn water front is different from today. If you were there, you would know the differences of Brooklyn Bridge Park between now and then. This place shows exactly history background of Brooklyn. (Admission fee: $10 suggested)
     8. Supreme Culinary Art | 7 p.m.
This is not exactly a part of Brooklyn water front, but it is not far from there and near Brooklyn Historical Society and also NU hotel. Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare is the best place to spend wonderful dinner time in Brooklyn. This restaurant only won three-stars awards in the Michelin guide 2014 and 2015 in Brooklyn. Famous Chefs in Brooklyn have created new cuisines and historical records with local food. Many fresh ingredients create harmony with skills of great chefs and serve them by excellent servers. There are only eighteen seats available at the same time. Reserve available seats when you plan to go. The current prix-fixe price is $255 per person plus NY tax and service fee with some drinks. The price is expensive, but the guests rarely disappoint and would have an excellent experience.

36 Hours on Brooklyn Waterfront

Friday

Hotel Le Bleu| 11 am

After getting off the plane I took a cab to Hotel Le Blue. When I first arrived, I enjoyed the comfortable cozy touch to the hotel. Since I came at breakfast time I was offered free breakfast. I had a nice balcony view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. I enjoyed that the staff was very friendly and catered to my needs. Although the hotel isn’t the fanciest hotel offered in New York, I appreciate the small environment, because the staff is able to cater to my needs. After a long flight I decided to get comfortable and get ready to enjoy my night.

Stone Park Cafe| 8 Pm

The great thing about the Brooklyn community it that all the businesses are by each other. Walking a 5 minute walk from my hotel I went to visit the Stone Park Cafe. I enjoyed the nice environment that the restaurant had to offer. I did enjoy the nice hospitality that the staff had to offer. I ordered a prime dry aged NY steak strip with an order of french fries and buttermilk onion rings ($30). I also bought some vanilla ice cream which cost $4.00. Overall I enjoyed my meal and I would recommend anyone to try this meal one day when they visit the Brooklyn area.

Saturday

York Street| 10am

It is a short walk from the hotel to the F train. Take the train towards Jamaica and get off at York St. Though the walk from the train to the park is 13 minutes. It is still a beautifully sunny day, so the walk isn’t much. On the way to the park we found there were a lot of vendors selling breakfast items. We ordered egg sandwiches, doughnuts and orange juice from a food truck called Eggs Travaganza. Though it was from a truck it tasted amazing and was easy to eat once we arrived at the park and found a place to sit down. The meal overall cost $13.

Brooklyn Bridge Park, Free Kayaking| 11am

We arrived to the Brooklyn Bridge park, only an hour after it opened for the day. There were a lot of people, which I didn’t expect. During the wait you are informed that you can only be on the water for about twenty minutes, but watching others, you know it will be an experience that is worth it. You are taught the basics of kayaking by an instructor, who also keeps watch on you at all times while you’re on the water. The sun hits the water beautifully, and you can see the different parts of the park as you wait. The wait isn’t bad, especially when you have people to talk about the scenery with. The people waiting were just as excited for the experience and very willing to converse with us. Being on the water was an amazing and rushing experience. I wish it had lasted longer than twenty-minutes because I was having an amazing time with the people I traveled with. At first paddling was a bit of an issue because I couldn’t get the rhythm but after a short time of practice I got the hang of it and enjoyed it even more.

Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory| 2pm

The walk to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory wasn’t long, because it was right near pier 1 of the Brooklyn Bridge park. I had a scoop of vanilla chocolate chunk ice cream and a scoop of strawberry on a cone ($6), and it tasted like the best mixture of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate I had ever had, and I am not the biggest fan of chocolate and vanilla mix of ice cream. The inside is cozy, giving you more of a homemade feel of ice cream opposed to a franchise like Baskin Robbins. The outside of the parlor looks like a lighthouse and its location really resembles where a lighthouse could be located. We take our ice cream and walk back to the park, appreciating the urban yet calm feel Brooklyn gives you. We stay laying out on the grass until the sun goes down and everyone decides they’re hungry.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que| 7:30pm

New York is known for how unique they are, hearing about a restaurant called Dinosaur Bar-B-Que intrigued us to want to travel there to eat for dinner. A friend was always a big fan of dinosaurs, the idea of eating at a place called it, made him very happy. The restaurant had a unique steakhouse kind of feel to it. I had the Chicken Steak which was around seventeen dollars. I didn’t find the plate expensive because the food was beyond tasty. The chicken was seasoned perfectly, and the steak was tender and easy to cut; every dollar was worth it.

Woodland| 10pm

After having a great meal we decided to hit a lounge. The lounge had large windows that were opened letting the summer breeze in. You sat on high simple yet elegant black chairs with matching high tables, right next to the open windows. Having drinks and drinking wine (30$), the music set the mood to be a very serene and relaxed environment. We even met people who had been visiting from North Carolina; it was nice meeting people who had been experiencing Brooklyn for the first time as well. A difference between my town and Brooklyn is that the places stay open late, and you can easily take a train to where you stay.

Sunday

Smorgasburg| 12 pm

After enjoying a breakfast from the hotel who generously offered it complimentary; the meal consisted of egg, sausage, and pancakes and a medium coffee. We decided to visit the Brooklyn flea by N 6th St, which had a lot of food and entertainment. There were many stands selling a variety of options to buy. I decided to buy a chicken buffalo sandwich, which was absolutely amazing; it came with a side order of tater tots and a free beverage, which cost about $11. I also bought some dessert, and bought myself a chocolate macadamia ice cream cake, which was to die for! ($6). I enjoyed the free entertainment that was provided, and I enjoyed how there were many options to choose upon. We even bought some healthy snacks (10$) and walked to East River park and relaxed, enjoying the sun and the different things we all had gotten.I overall enjoyed my day here at the flea market, and hope to visit here another time when I visit New York.

36 hours on Brooklyn Waterfront — Zhang Feng

36 hours in Brooklyn

Brooklyn history introduction “Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs, with about 2.6 million people, as well as the second-largest in area. It is geographically adjacent to the borough of Queens at the western end of Long Island. Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, which is the most populous county in New York and the second-most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County (Manhattan). Today, if it were an independent city, Brooklyn would rank as the fourth most populous city in the U.S., behind only the other boroughs of New York City combined, Los Angeles, and Chicago.”

Friday:
1. Eat around the Brooklyn waterfront./ 5pm

There are several food vendors with delicious treats, the first place I went to is calling “Mac Shack”. The Mac and cheese at Mac shack ranks up there with the most renowned Mac spots in the city. I got the vegan Mac which was packed with veggies including mushrooms, tomatoes and green beans. It was well baked to give it a crispy but not burnt taste. It was also very cheesy which a plus is always.

  1. Visit the living place / 10pm

The “Box Hotel” in 77 Box Street in Brooklyn is an excellent place! First of all, this Hotel is perfectly situated in the very far north of Brooklyn, with only a Bridge separating Queens. It’s an old converted warehouse, and outside you kind of feel you’re in an Industrial Area, But inside, what a different world which got better and better. Reception was always being nice to people, nothing was too much trouble and they were very knowledgeable about the local area, even giving us free Subway maps and Timetables. Everything except the wifi was perfect. Nice and clean, great staff, loved our room, the view and the bed. At first the bed gave me a surprise, it was so firm and hard. I love hard beds!

Saturday

  1. Dinner in “Ale House”/ 6pm

I went is “Ale house”, in there, the menu might read very pedestrian, basic BBQ, burgers etc, and also there was a serious chef in that kitchen! The food comes out so fast, not even west my time to wait for it which is good because I hate waiting. On a recent visit I ordered a chicken bacon burger, which was a patty made of ground chicken and bacon, super flavorful and not like anything else I’ve tried.  The hand cut fries are delicious; ask for the house-made hot sauce and ketchup.

  1. Having fun with “Music” / 8pm

After I have a dinner, I was going to visit a famous building named “BAM” (Brooklyn Academy of Music), I am a music fans, I love music very much, so I decided to go there. In there you will see information about this building; it wrote “BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a not-for-profit performing- and cinema-arts center founded in 1861. In addition to the more than 200 stage performances the academy presents annually, BAM café Live puts on 75 free performances every year. If you’re more of a film buff, the center has a four-screen cinema that shows new movies as well as repertory films.”880-dsc-0003

 Sunday

  1. Shopping in Williamsburg Sunday Brooklyn Flea / 1pm to 5pm

Once I woke up, I can not wait to shopping in outdoor of Williamsburg Sunday Brooklyn Flea, in there, plenty of vendors selling both food and wares, located on the banks of the East River, have impressive views of the Manhattan skyline. The Flea is sandwiched in between the North side Pier and Park and the East River Park, giving visitors plenty of space to lounge. About 75% of Brooklyn Flea vendors are vintage sellers – clothing, shoes, and handbags, mostly for women. Handmade jewelry, handmade clothing and crafts are also well-represented. In the back of the market (closer to the East River) you’ll find a group of furniture sellers with fantastic vintage pieces, from desks to cabinets to eccentric clocks and lamps. The largest vendors (selling clothing and shoes) are the mainstays of the flea marketbkfleaphoto 2

36 hours on Brooklyn Waterfront- Jiajie Tan

Brooklyn is one of the borough of New York City. It owns a rich history and bunch of entertainments around there. It doesn’t matter which season you go, here still can offer you a perfect trip. Most of time, I would like to go in summer and fall, because these two seasons make me feel comfortable and have more entertainments.

Friday:

1, Enjoy the sunrise. 8 Amdownload

First,We will drive ourselves or take B6 bus and arrive at the destination called “Belt parkway”(a place which locates beside the sea and there are some stores which sell material goods).

Then,we people could according to their own habits to do something they like .For example, you could go into “BestBuy” if you have  interesting in electric, also you could go to “Modells” to shop some sport goods. Kohl’s is a mall that contains a lot of living goods. We could buy a little pizza and a coffee, then sit on the bench to appreciate the sunrise while we are fishing.

2, lunch special. 12 Amdownload (1)

Then we will take the bus back to 86 street 18 avenue and walk down to 13 avenue. The “Outback” steak house is right there waiting for us. The “Bloomin Onion” is one of my favorite appetizers, this onion is in deep fire and its shape is like a flower when it’s in front of you. This onion costs you about $8.49, but I feel it worth anyway. If you like, you could get a cocktail, beer, milkshakes and soft drinks. The purpose we come here is for the steak. The one that I feel cheap and delicious is called “Parmesan-Herb Crusted Chicken” and it cost you only 15.99 dollars. Stay inside and enjoy the food would make you feel happy because this hot weather.

3, Go into another China Town in Brooklyn. 3pm

8 AV is another China Town in Brooklyn. Here always are crowded day or night because a bunch shops open till mid night. As we known, all things made in China are cheap, so don’t save your money for our pocket this time, just buy and buy. Also, if you are interested in cooking, here will be a treasure for you because all seafood markets and meat markets locate between 59 street and 53 street.  In an addition, there have three large super market locate between 60 street and 61 street. So, how can we miss that.

4, Have fun at night,   6pm

As we see, the temperature have been down to 70 degrees, so is time to go out at night. “100 Fun” is a Karla okay where contains limited room for you to relax and it locates at 59th street 9 avenue. For the reminder, in the night time, below 21 years old are not allowed. You could order any food and drinks, even water. If you drive, hope you do not drink any alcohol, because you will get caught, there a bunch of polices hide around. Also, be good to yourself and others.

5, Try the Food Truck. 10 pm

I know you are tired and hungry after you sang . So, we could go down to 60th street 8 avenue, there has a barbecue food truck called “369”. You won’t lose when you walk around here, because the smell you bring you to the subway stations and the food truck is next to it. You better try their barbecue whole squid, juicy and crispy. I don’t think one portion can satisfy you, and I know you will buy more than one. They also have barbecue pan cake, all kind of meat.

6, Dessert time. 11 pm

Dessert is necessary after dinner. “Kulu”  dessert is a good choice to visit. I always buy a tea is mixed by red bean, yam and milk. Then, I would like to buy a crepe and it has choice for you; you could choose turkey, ham, beef or shrimp with thousand island sauce or Caesar. A warm drink would give you a good sleep.

Saturday

7, Walk through the Brooklyn Bridge 12 am

Brooklyn Bridge is a bridge which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan and it becomes the icon of the New York City. It was opened for use in May 24, 1883 till now, and the renovation on and off. Although the renovation sometimes bothers the people, but that can’t stop people visit the bridge. When you walk by the bridge, you could see the view of Brooklyn and Manhattan and you also can see the status of liberty. Breathe a fresh air and scream out loud, to be proud of a New Yorker.

8, Junior’s Restaurant. 2 pm

Take R train to DeKalb and down to Flatbush Avenue, and we will see the Junior’s restaurant in front of us. Its cheese cake is just its advertisement “fabulous”. For me, it is an icon of the restaurant. The cheese cake is a priority, you must order and try. The one I like is called Devil food cheesecake which contains a lot of chocolate. However, you better come with your friend, because they only serve the cheese cake in a large size which means it could serve 6 to 8 people, even more. Its cheese cake 29.95 dollars up to 50 dollars. For the reminder, here is not only serve cheese cake, it also offers the regular food.

9, Take a City bike. 5 pm

In downtown Brooklyn, get a city bike is more convenience that take the subway and bus.  Now, it is time to appreciate the sunset and the perfect place is Brooklyn Bridge Park. We will see there have 5 piers there and the construction is still on, but it won’t bother us. In an addition, there has an ice cream factory and we could buy some for the time we enjoy the sunset. Sometimes, here will have some event, such as smorgasbord, unfortunately, it was just passed by 2 months. Also, you could go around the park and see how amazing it is. There owns a lot of facilities, you could run, watch the kids play basketball game, football game and soccer game. If you are interested in, you could be a part of them. Most of time, I would like to sit on the bench and watch the sun down to the west and feel its warmth.

10, Lay down on the lawn.  9pm

Here is such a star observation platform. When you lay down on the lawn, you will be relaxed and you could observe the stars, moon and the airplanes. Maybe, you will feel boring, but you should try and see how it is going.  To be a part of nature is a good way to release.

36 Hours on the Brooklyn Waterfront

With beautiful clear skies, joggers will be seen jogging along the Brooklyn Bridge park, With their pets or by themselves, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. The Brooklyn Waterfront is known to attract quite a handful amount of people during the weekends or just on a regular day with food fairs, music, and ferry rides, it is the place to be when you are visiting Brooklyn for the first time. City life can’t get any busier when your’re there.

Friday

1. A Cup of Joe | 1 p.m.

From the looks on the outside it looks like an old vintage building but take a step in and think again. The Brooklyn Roasting Company is a place where all the people connect and have a cup of coffee to go along with it. You might think what is so special about this particular coffee shop compared to a chain like Starbucks. Well, the Brooklyn Roasting Company does fair trade, which means the farmers that grew and picked the coffee beans gets a fair share of the money unlike other brands of coffee that people consume. If your wish to purchase a can of 12 oz. of high quality coffee beans, it goes for $13 or if you just want a cup of coffee, it goes for at least $4. Ranging from Costa Rica Naranjo to Sumatra Espresso coffee beans, it would take weeks to finish each type of coffee they offer.

2. 1.3 Miles of Green | 3 p.m.

Right under the Brooklyn Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge park was only recently built not so long ago. This is a place where you will find photographers snapping away on their cameras and a hub for all the joggers around to finish their daily routines. Although it gets a little cold here, it’s worth it  so even if you go there alone, there are many things to keep you busy like taking pictures or enjoying the food on the park’s pier. Your will be right next to the water looking at the Manhattan skyline and I do recommend you to go there during the night time because the lights are just amazing.

3. The Arts | 5 p.m.

The Dumbo Galleries is on the second floor located at 111 Front Street, this is where the residents of Dumbo or anyone with loads of cash buy some fine art for their apartments. I suggest you only go there and take a long because the art there can cost a few thousand dollars depending on the artist. The Dumbo Galleries is a great place for for artists to showcase their magnificent talents and not to mention that just peaking in there is free of admission.

4. Brooklyn Bridge | 6 p.m.

The first bridge that held the title for being the longest suspension bridge in 1883 when it opened still stands strong providing millions of daily New Yorkers a way to travel between the residential borough of Brooklyn yo the busy business side of Manhattan. Millions of tourist come to the Brooklyn Waterfront annually to embrace the iconic structure of New York because it’s part of New York’s history. It took almost a decade and a half with the help of at least 600 workers to complete it. It was also designated as a historic landmark in the 1960’s. The method of traveling include walking, biking, driving, and even what most New Yorkers use, the MTA.

Saturday

5. Food Truck Galore | 1 p.m.

Within the Brooklyn Waterfront proximity there are many food trucks that will grab your attention but the one I chose was the Kimchi Taco food truck. They serve Korean BBQ, which is their specialty. The grilled Korean BBQ short rib which is served in a burrito and stuffed with their signature marinade along with red cabbage apple pear kimchi slaw which goes for $9. If you’re short on change, no need to worry because for $3 you can get a 4″ tortilla filled with spicy grilled chicken that will make your taste buds explode.

6. Provide a Helping Hand | 2 p.m.

Who wants to pick up garbage during their trip on the Brooklyn Waterfront? Although you don’t automatically get picked for signing up to volunteer at the Brooklyn Bridge park, you can still pitch in and help keep the park clean by throwing garbage in where they belong. During your stay on the Brooklyn Bridge park you might encounter a group of volunteers that tends the green fields or planting saplings so don’t be afraid to ask them questions about the park, you might leave with a handful of interesting facts.

7. High-End | 7 p.m.

Nothing is better than eating something delicious after some volunteer work on the Brooklyn Bridge park. The One Front Street is a fancy little restaurant that provides you high-end quality dishes that will make you want more. They cater foods like the shrimp cocktail for $9.95 and if you want to get a taste of New York, get the New York Strip Steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus for $17.95. After the main course, finish it with a slice of cheesecake for dessert.

8. Sleep Tight | 9 p.m.

A long day deserves a long and comfortable sleep and the best place for that is the Aloft Hotel. Unlike other hotels, the Aloft hotel provide a hip feel to it with their signature plush bedding. If you don’t want to sleep right away, there is a bar on the rooftop so you can have fun and drink away with others. Start a conversation and make new friends and tell them about your accomplishments on the Brooklyn Waterfront so far. But don’t drink too much because on Sunday there is still more to do.

Sunday

9. Ever Heard of Smorgasburg? 11 a.m.

Forget about the food truck, Smorgasburg is the place to be. Every Sunday, people from all over New York come to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier to experience a massive mix of cultures with food everywhere you look. From freshly made cookies, to Asian style dumplings. to many homemade recipes that are trying to get their name out. Hundreds of unique one-of-a-kind foods, you wish to never leave this place. Hundreds of food vendors and thousands of visitors equals Smorgasburg so do try as much as you possibly can.

10. St. Ann’s Warehouse | 2 p.m.

The St. Ann’s Warehouse is not a warehouse but a theater that’s literally right next to the Brooklyn Roasting Company. It’s like Brooklyn’s own Broadway and it’s $20 person and normally there’s lots of people. They do their own kind of performances unlike the typical Broadway musical plays. There is a 2 p.m. performance, Tristan & Yseult so you’re just in time.

11. Natural Ice Cream | 5 p.m.

An Ice cream ship called the Broklyn Ice Cream Factory is located on Water Street and Old Fulton that was opened in the early 2000’s. Unlike store bought ice cream, their ice cream are produced freshly and homemade. Flavors include strawberry, butter pecan, chocolate, peaches and cream, and vanilla. Old fashion light-creamy texture that will just melt in your mouth because it’s made with less butter and not eggs needed. It’s quite a tourist trap because there’s nothing like it.

12. The Ale House | 6 p.m.

The Waterfront Ale House might just be the perfect place to finish your exploring on the Brooklyn Waterfront becasue their menu is descrubed as one of the best by New York Magazine. Their menu consist of spicy chicken wings drizzled with the chef’s famous hot sauce, ale battered shrimp, and even the Texas Style, which is pork and beef simmered with tomatoes, spices and beer for $10.95.

36 hours in Brooklyn waterfront

36 hours in Brooklyn

Feng Zhang
If you’re more of a film buff, the center has a four-screen cinema that shows new movies as well as repertory films.”
Sunday
The largest vendors (selling clothing and shoes) are the mainstays of the flea market

36 Hours On The Brooklyn Water Front

The Brooklyn Waterfront is a hip place to gather and have a great time with others, friends, and loved ones. There are many things to do along the vast waterfront. Within the next 36 hours two 21+ friends are going to discover what the waterfront has to offer them. There will be plenty of food, drinks, view, and crazy cool things to do. There is no time for sleep, only time for discovering! What makes the waterfront great is that the transit is in walking distance. Better yet the places are in walking distance of each other! Nothing is more than a 20-minute walk away. Great way to cut back on spending and pollution.

Friday

5:30 p.m. – The Wythe Hotel

Wythe Hotel was an old abandoned factory located on the Williamsburg waterfront. The building was primarily constructed in 1901 and has been refurbished into a 70-room hotel. The Bunk Bed suit is the recommend accommodation.  It is the cheapest one ($325), but it is still nice. With staying at the Wythe, guests have access to a screening room, free access to a nearby gym, live entertainment (surcharge), a trendy rooftop bar and a French-inspired restaurant (about $60 between two people). So before venturing out to other spots along the waterfront, check in and check it out.

8:30 p.m. – Pies ‘n Thighs (18 min walk)

Since their debut on Guy Fieri’s Diners Drive-Inns and Dives, they have been busy keeping up with the added customers. The wait time might be a bit longer but once there is a free table, sit down and feel free to order one of their well liked doughnuts, a drink, chicken and waffles, or pie (about $25 per person)! Pies ‘n Thighs specializes in classic all American comfort food, using fresh ingredients.

10:00 p.m. – The Woods (5 min walk)

The Woods is a bar with great affordable drinks it opens at 4pm and happy hour lasts until 8, Monday- Friday. Wells are $3, Yeungling $3, and $1 off any drink! The more fun drinks (margarita) are fairly priced. If at any time there is a late night snack craving, The Woods carries Landaus” bar snacks. Here, one can listen to great music by great DJs, while hanging out with friends and having a drink. It is a great place to hold a fun nigh out with a group of friends.

1:15 a.m. – Output (16 min walk)

The club is open to anyone BUT it is not for everyone. Its purpose is mainly to let people enjoy music and have a chance to dance. Black light and Rooftop parties are hands down. 360-degree view, listening to great dancing music while busting a move in a crowd of people who are enjoying their time. Their dress code is “Brooklyn is the new black.” General admission is about $20 their tickets can be bought online. There is not any table service nor are there reservations available. Go for the night. Enjoy the night. It is also a one-minute walk from The Wythe hotel.

Saturday

10:00 a.m. – Devocion (11 mins)

The Waterfront is a great place to grab a strong cup of coffee. There are many coffee houses to choose from: Brooklyn roasting, to Sweet Leaf Coffee and Espresso Bar. Devocion however, is a great coffee warehouse refurbished for a hip new crowd of coffee fanatics. Stay a while; enjoy the space and its thick aromatics laced with the smell of coffee.

11:00 a.m. Egg Restaurant (5min)

Appropriately named after the item they specialize in. Egg is small and is mostly known for their great breakfast and brunch menu. The restaurant however, exclusively serves breakfast lunch daily. There is a limited menu during the weekend. Since it is very popular, the wait during the weekends is long (hour). The lucky ones only wait 15 minutes. When a table is finally available, the food on the menu will make up for it. The chorizo egg sandwich would go for about $13.

12:00 p.m.-East River State Park

From all the eating, partying and drinking that has taken place over the past 12 hours it would be best to do something healthy for a small while. Great thing the East River State Park is an 8 min head start to a healthy activity. There are plentiful activities there. The green lawn is great for afternoon joggers, picnickers, yogis, and kids running about. Speaking of kids there is a playground for them with sprinklers! It is to the left of the entrance at the bottom of a slope that will lead to a great over view of the Brooklyn Promenade.

During this time Smorgasburg should be up and running. It takes place during the weekend. Saturdays it is held at the East River State Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sundays, it is held during the same time but at a different part of the Brooklyn Waterfront, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Smorgasburg is a part of the Brooklyn Flea Market. There is a plethora of food vendors coming together and selling their top items to the people of the Brooklyn waterfront. Unfortunately, it can be a bit pricy. Ramen Burger charges $9 for their original burger, a 16 oz. soda cost $4, and one doughnut from Dough costs $2.75. The experience of being overwhelmed by joy and delight because of all the good food is worth it!

5:00 -Wythe Hotel (5 mins)

There is just enough time to regroup at the hotel and enjoy their amenities. Check Facebook, twitter, add the recently taken pictures onto Instagram, and iMessage people without using data since Wythe has complementary wifi. Take a quick nap, enjoy the roof top bar, or shower off all the sweat from being healthy at the park.

8:00 p.m. – Glasslands (14 mins)

Unique light fixtures, other art pieces, and musical entertainment by live bands are what will be found at Glasslands. The balcony shows the great and popular view of the Brooklyn Waterfront. Take pictures in the photo booth with friends to commemorate the time spent there. For ladies, there is not much of a place to sit. The high heels might not be the best of ideas. Just remember the Output’s dress code: “Brooklyn is the new black.”

Sunday

11:00a.m. – Aurora (11 mins)

Brunch, the meal of champions! Aurora does a great brunch Sunday mornings. It is from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., lunch is served from 12 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., and dinner 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Aurora serves really good Italian food using the freshest of ingredients. For two people brunch could span from 50-60 USD.
