by Ayako Hiratsuka

New York is the most popular city for tourists to visit in the world in 2012. Brooklyn, which is a borough of New York, is developing recently. Especially, Brooklyn water front has been renovated by the government and local people. However, the area of Brooklyn water front still has many historical backgrounds and places. Historical tourism refers to a kind of tourism, where the tourist or tour groups focuses on the history; history of some place, people, thing, or events. Tourists can visit those historical important places to know about the culture, tradition, and past happening and get to know about the evolution and development in culture around Brooklyn water front. Recommend to go here during spring or fall.

Friday
     1. Drink Up Brooklyn | 6 p.m.
Always, Brooklyn has been a haven for immigrants and businessmen. Thanks to immigration from Germany in 19th Century, Brooklyn, along with cities like St. Louis and Milwaukee with large German populations, became one of America’s foremost brewing centers in the 1800s. There were about 48 breweries in Brooklyn one hundred years ago. However, the number of breweries decreased due to change of laws and other issues. In 1984, Steve Hindy and Tom Potter founded The Brooklyn Brewery with their limited sources. Their first goal was to bring good beer back to New York City. Now it is one of the famous fantastic beer company in New York. Before you go there, you would take some food from neighbor restaurants or food trucks in Williamsburg. Upon arrival, taste about ten varieties of Brooklyn beer with your food. ($5/drink or $20/5drinks) Brooklyn Lager that was the first beer is a must.
     2. Jewelry on the East River | 7 p.m.
After sunset, cities are lightened; otherwise, last ferry in the day leaves the harbor in Williamsburg around 8 p.m. (Depend on the season.) Ride on the ferry to go to Dumbo.($4) After the ferry left, enjoy the night scene on both the East river sides. This is New York. In the past, there was no transportation to go over the east river. When the river was frozen in the winter season, some people might walk on the river. Due to Industry and Technology developments, we can enjoy bright cities on the ferry.
     3. Feel Music | 8 p.m.
Prefer to listen to real music, go to Bargemusic. (Usually $35) Bargemusic was founded in 1976 by Mark Peskanov and was built in 1899 serving as a working vessel for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in the New York Harbor, delivering hand-loaded sacks of coffee before being brought by Olga Bloom. Usually every Thursday to Sunday, music events are held. It looks a ferry outside but inside of the hall is very classic and old-fashioned. Now is time to feel fantastic music with a night view in Downtown Manhattan; it is romantic.

Walking or cycling on the Brooklyn Bridge will be an effective activity to know more about its history and also enjoy the view. Watch the side of Manhattan Bridge. There is a carousel on the Brooklyn water front; Jane’s Carousel was made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1922. It has classic 3 row machines and 48 horses in a pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel. Jane Walentas, who are residents of Brooklyn, bought it at an auction in 1984 and fixed it in Dumbo for about 27 years. Finally, it is located on between Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. If you ride on the horse and touch it, you may feel this historical background more. ($2)

36 Hours on Brooklyn Waterfront

Friday

Hotel Le Bleu| 11 am

After getting off the plane I took a cab to Hotel Le Blue. When I first arrived, I enjoyed the comfortable cozy touch to the hotel. Since I came at breakfast time I was offered free breakfast. I had a nice balcony view of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. I enjoyed that the staff was very friendly and catered to my needs. Although the hotel isn’t the fanciest hotel offered in New York, I appreciate the small environment, because the staff is able to cater to my needs. After a long flight I decided to get comfortable and get ready to enjoy my night.

Stone Park Cafe| 8 Pm

The great thing about the Brooklyn community it that all the businesses are by each other. Walking a 5 minute walk from my hotel I went to visit the Stone Park Cafe. I enjoyed the nice environment that the restaurant had to offer. I did enjoy the nice hospitality that the staff had to offer. I ordered a prime dry aged NY steak strip with an order of french fries and buttermilk onion rings ($30). I also bought some vanilla ice cream which cost $4.00. Overall I enjoyed my meal and I would recommend anyone to try this meal one day when they visit the Brooklyn area.

Saturday

York Street| 10am

It is a short walk from the hotel to the F train. Take the train towards Jamaica and get off at York St. Though the walk from the train to the park is 13 minutes. It is still a beautifully sunny day, so the walk isn’t much. On the way to the park we found there were a lot of vendors selling breakfast items. We ordered egg sandwiches, doughnuts and orange juice from a food truck called Eggs Travaganza. Though it was from a truck it tasted amazing and was easy to eat once we arrived at the park and found a place to sit down. The meal overall cost $13.

Brooklyn Bridge Park, Free Kayaking| 11am

We arrived to the Brooklyn Bridge park, only an hour after it opened for the day. There were a lot of people, which I didn’t expect. During the wait you are informed that you can only be on the water for about twenty minutes, but watching others, you know it will be an experience that is worth it. You are taught the basics of kayaking by an instructor, who also keeps watch on you at all times while you’re on the water. The sun hits the water beautifully, and you can see the different parts of the park as you wait. The wait isn’t bad, especially when you have people to talk about the scenery with. The people waiting were just as excited for the experience and very willing to converse with us. Being on the water was an amazing and rushing experience. I wish it had lasted longer than twenty-minutes because I was having an amazing time with the people I traveled with. At first paddling was a bit of an issue because I couldn’t get the rhythm but after a short time of practice I got the hang of it and enjoyed it even more.

Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory| 2pm

The walk to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory wasn’t long, because it was right near pier 1 of the Brooklyn Bridge park. I had a scoop of vanilla chocolate chunk ice cream and a scoop of strawberry on a cone ($6), and it tasted like the best mixture of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate I had ever had, and I am not the biggest fan of chocolate and vanilla mix of ice cream. The inside is cozy, giving you more of a homemade feel of ice cream opposed to a franchise like Baskin Robbins. The outside of the parlor looks like a lighthouse and its location really resembles where a lighthouse could be located. We take our ice cream and walk back to the park, appreciating the urban yet calm feel Brooklyn gives you. We stay laying out on the grass until the sun goes down and everyone decides they’re hungry.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que| 7:30pm

New York is known for how unique they are, hearing about a restaurant called Dinosaur Bar-B-Que intrigued us to want to travel there to eat for dinner. A friend was always a big fan of dinosaurs, the idea of eating at a place called it, made him very happy. The restaurant had a unique steakhouse kind of feel to it. I had the Chicken Steak which was around seventeen dollars. I didn’t find the plate expensive because the food was beyond tasty. The chicken was seasoned perfectly, and the steak was tender and easy to cut; every dollar was worth it.

Woodland| 10pm

After having a great meal we decided to hit a lounge. The lounge had large windows that were opened letting the summer breeze in. You sat on high simple yet elegant black chairs with matching high tables, right next to the open windows. Having drinks and drinking wine (30$), the music set the mood to be a very serene and relaxed environment. We even met people who had been visiting from North Carolina; it was nice meeting people who had been experiencing Brooklyn for the first time as well. A difference between my town and Brooklyn is that the places stay open late, and you can easily take a train to where you stay.

Sunday

Smorgasburg| 12 pm

After enjoying a breakfast from the hotel who generously offered it complimentary; the meal consisted of egg, sausage, and pancakes and a medium coffee. We decided to visit the Brooklyn flea by N 6th St, which had a lot of food and entertainment. There were many stands selling a variety of options to buy. I decided to buy a chicken buffalo sandwich, which was absolutely amazing; it came with a side order of tater tots and a free beverage, which cost about $11. I also bought some dessert, and bought myself a chocolate macadamia ice cream cake, which was to die for! ($6). I enjoyed the free entertainment that was provided, and I enjoyed how there were many options to choose upon. We even bought some healthy snacks (10$) and walked to East River park and relaxed, enjoying the sun and the different things we all had gotten.I overall enjoyed my day here at the flea market, and hope to visit here another time when I visit New York.

36 hours on Brooklyn Waterfront — Zhang Feng

36 hours in Brooklyn

Brooklyn history introduction “Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs, with about 2.6 million people, as well as the second-largest in area. It is geographically adjacent to the borough of Queens at the western end of Long Island. Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, which is the most populous county in New York and the second-most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County (Manhattan). Today, if it were an independent city, Brooklyn would rank as the fourth most populous city in the U.S., behind only the other boroughs of New York City combined, Los Angeles, and Chicago.”

Friday:
1. Eat around the Brooklyn waterfront./ 5pm

There are several food vendors with delicious treats, the first place I went to is calling “Mac Shack”. The Mac and cheese at Mac shack ranks up there with the most renowned Mac spots in the city. I got the vegan Mac which was packed with veggies including mushrooms, tomatoes and green beans. It was well baked to give it a crispy but not burnt taste. It was also very cheesy which a plus is always.

  1. Visit the living place / 10pm

The “Box Hotel” in 77 Box Street in Brooklyn is an excellent place! First of all, this Hotel is perfectly situated in the very far north of Brooklyn, with only a Bridge separating Queens. It’s an old converted warehouse, and outside you kind of feel you’re in an Industrial Area, But inside, what a different world which got better and better. Reception was always being nice to people, nothing was too much trouble and they were very knowledgeable about the local area, even giving us free Subway maps and Timetables. Everything except the wifi was perfect. Nice and clean, great staff, loved our room, the view and the bed. At first the bed gave me a surprise, it was so firm and hard. I love hard beds!

Saturday

  1. Dinner in “Ale House”/ 6pm

I went is “Ale house”, in there, the menu might read very pedestrian, basic BBQ, burgers etc, and also there was a serious chef in that kitchen! The food comes out so fast, not even west my time to wait for it which is good because I hate waiting. On a recent visit I ordered a chicken bacon burger, which was a patty made of ground chicken and bacon, super flavorful and not like anything else I’ve tried.  The hand cut fries are delicious; ask for the house-made hot sauce and ketchup.

  1. Having fun with “Music” / 8pm

After I have a dinner, I was going to visit a famous building named “BAM” (Brooklyn Academy of Music), I am a music fans, I love music very much, so I decided to go there. In there you will see information about this building; it wrote “BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is a not-for-profit performing- and cinema-arts center founded in 1861. In addition to the more than 200 stage performances the academy presents annually, BAM café Live puts on 75 free performances every year. If you’re more of a film buff, the center has a four-screen cinema that shows new movies as well as repertory films.”880-dsc-0003

 Sunday

  1. Shopping in Williamsburg Sunday Brooklyn Flea / 1pm to 5pm

Once I woke up, I can not wait to shopping in outdoor of Williamsburg Sunday Brooklyn Flea, in there, plenty of vendors selling both food and wares, located on the banks of the East River, have impressive views of the Manhattan skyline. The Flea is sandwiched in between the North side Pier and Park and the East River Park, giving visitors plenty of space to lounge. About 75% of Brooklyn Flea vendors are vintage sellers – clothing, shoes, and handbags, mostly for women. Handmade jewelry, handmade clothing and crafts are also well-represented. In the back of the market (closer to the East River) you’ll find a group of furniture sellers with fantastic vintage pieces, from desks to cabinets to eccentric clocks and lamps. The largest vendors (selling clothing and shoes) are the mainstays of the flea marketbkfleaphoto 2

36 hours in Brooklyn waterfront

36 hours in Brooklyn

Feng Zhang
If you’re more of a film buff, the center has a four-screen cinema that shows new movies as well as repertory films.”
Sunday
The largest vendors (selling clothing and shoes) are the mainstays of the flea market

36 Hours on the Brooklyn Water front

When you think of New York City, you think of the crazy hustle and bustle. Sure, it is a nice getaway, but if you’re looking for something slightly more mellow, head down to Brooklyn, NY. The Brooklyn Water front offers a variety of locations with tons of things you can do there that will catch your eye… and satisfy your taste buds.

Friday

  1. The start of your journey | 11 a.m

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. First stop at the XO Creperie that’s located on Emmons avenue. This is the place to go to indulge yourself with the finest crepes. If it’s sweet that your craving, go for the Nutella crepes with strawberries ($16). If it’s something savory, go ahead and order the Eggs Benedict with Lox in Creamy Cheese Sauce ($11). 2. Coney Island | 12:30 p.m

Coney Island offers an ideal summer getaway from the nuttiness left back at home. Visit Coney Island that stretches nearly 3 miles of sandy beaches, clear blue skies, sound of clashing waves, and sea salt aroma in the air. There you can feel the warm sand in between your toes, sit near the ocean, and have an oasis of serenity. Take a nice long stroll on the beach or the boardwalk with your friends and family… The best part of it is it’s free!

3. Nathan’s Famous| 3:00 p.m

Coming to Coney Island and not trying Nathan’s is like going to Arizona and forgetting to stop at the Grand Canyon. It is just a fast food joint you might say, yes, but it is the original Nathan’s that Brooklyn carries. Go on and try the world’s famous beef chili cheese dog ($4.79) and wash it down with a refreshing old fashioned lemonade ($2.59). Happen to be near by Nathan’s on July 4th? Perfect! There you will enjoy watching their annual hot dog eating contest. That will be a memory you certainly will not forget.

4. Fun Times|5:30 p.m

Coney Island not only carries the original Nathan’s. It also holds a landmark that everyone knows about when they think of Coney Island. Start your fun adventure with Coney Island’s famous roller coaster, The Cyclone. This coaster in fact sounds like it is loose and falling apart, but people gravitate to that and find their thrill even more heightened.  Crazy right? After riding the Cyclone, head inside Luna park (free entry) and extract the kid that is hiding inside you. Enjoy the rides until your stomach can bear no more. If you had enough of all the spinning and twirling, walk down to the beach where they show free movies from a giant 40 foot inflatable screen. Lay down the beach towel and get that popcorn ready!

Saturday

5. Gone Fishin’| 7:00 a.m

Come aboard the Marilyn Jean IV charter for a memorable fishing excursion. Located just off pier 6 on Emmons avenue. The charter departs from the pier and takes you along a peaceful, but yet exciting trip past Brooklyn’s famous Coney Island, Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Manhattan NY Skyline, and the Statue of Liberty while enjoying the essence of fishing. The fish that are caught, may be taken home; The crew can fillet the fish upon request. The trip is a total of 5 hours ($25) and guarantees a lifetime experience, so reservations are strongly recommended. Food is served and equipment is included on the trip.

What is so great about NYC is that the city offers you a wide range of things to do. If you have a strong passion for food, Food On Foot Tours is what you can’t miss out on. 9. Sleep Tight| Lodging

Nothing is better than coming home from a long day and just flopping right down to your king sized bed. Although Comfort inn isn’t the most luxuries of the hotels, I didn’t want this adventure to be only about where you are staying.
