DLee My Thoughts (edit)

What is poetry?  This question appears to simply be somewhat of a rhetorical question.  Throughout this semester in poetry, I have learned to analyze poems in ways I never would have before; to dissect the very essence of a word and determine why a poet chose to use that word and not another.  I have analyzed poems to the point of where I can no longer see simply the face of the poem, but the heart of the poem and see the writings as if through the eyes of the poet themselves.  So what is poetry then?  Like the title states in Jack Gilbert’s writing, poetry is “the forgotten dialect of the heart”, it is a language in itself created by poets themselves.  We can find poetry within everything in our lives, the simplest or most intimate details of ourselves can become poetry; and this is what makes poetry so unique; poetry is within each one of us because in essence, we are all poets.

My Wikipedea Experience

I would first like to say I think the assignments overall aim was a good idea. I’ve never been assigned or actually encouraged to use Wikipedia for a class assignment which explains my unfamiliarity with adding and making edits. The task itself to me seemed simple Enough, simply pick a stub from the list and research for more info. unfortunately the Library’s Database was of little to no help, I couldn’t find anything on my topic                “Enclosed Rhyme.”  I was nervous about actually making changes to Wikipedia because Although I’ve used the site before I was the one requesting information not providing it. I was worried that my work would be removed and  ridiculed by professional “wikipedians” due to my lack of sources. I didn’t make an account on the site instead I simply posted my work on the site. After a few minutes I return to the page just to find my work removed by a “bot”. As instructed to do by the professor I re-posted my work back on the page and It stayed. My experience wasn’t terrible but as for as Enjoying or Disliking the assignment I would say i’m 50/50 because I felt like a blind person leading the blind but I did learn more about Wikipedia.

my wiki experience

I had a horrible experience with this wiki assignment. I added to wiki before and it was easy and smooth, but this time i found it difficult and annoying. I found it annoying because it was hard to find a good stub to add too, and also finding data that is backed up from our colleges library database. The horrible part was holding back your own personal points, and not adding your comments or thoughts. but overall its an experience that I believe everyone should try once in their life time, so they can be part of the wiki community.

my wiki stub was Charlotte Champe Stearns, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Champe_Stearns

My Wikipedia Experience

1. The process I went through when adding material to the Wikipedia page was rather simple. (Although I did forget to make an account and used the “help” button.) I followed the link from the list of stubs we were given and clicked “edit”.

2. When I finished editing the stub I clicked “done” and it was updated instantly.

3. What I enjoyed most about the experience was that many of the sources I found were written in Spanish and I found it funny how Bing translated them into English so inaccurately.

4. What I found difficult about this assignment was how hard researching is. Originally, I had planned on doing Osvaldo Rodriguez but I could find little to no information on him.

5. This assignment was different from a typical course paper because we could not use any of our own opinions. I prefer the course paper because it makes me think a little bit more.

Wikipedia experience

1. First i search the library’s database but when I can’t find anything, I went to the librarian for help.

2. I checked a couple of times but there is no edit to the page.

3. What i enjoyed the most was learning how to edit the wikipedia page such as learning a little about html.

4. Looking for information that you can use for the wikipedia site was the hardest.

5. I really didn’t enjoy this assignment because i was afraid to edit the wikipedia site even when i had enough information to change it. i kept going back and forth to the view history page to see if i done something right or not.

Wikipedia Experience.

I didn’t really enjoy this assignment because I was nervous about editing a Wikipedia page. I’ve never even thought about changing someone else’s work or posting something that everyone else was going to see.  I didn’t want to be wrong and then they would end up taking down my post. Another thing that I didn’t like was that I couldn’t say my own opinion about the topic I chose. When we started this class we stated our own opinions, and did close readings on poems and then shared our own thoughts about what we thought the poem meant; and in this assignment we couldn’t really do that. The most frustrating part was finding extra outside sources, I couldn’t really find much on my topic so it did get annoying at times. With all that said I do prefer this type of assignment instead of a term paper, but i just wish it didn’t have to do with Wikipedia. Maybe next time it could be like a complete blog post about our favorite poet or poem.

My Wikipedia Experience

I found the assignment to be quite interesting. It’s something I’ve never been told to do in school as an assignment and is quite different. I’ll take the opposing view and say that I found the Wikipedia assignment quite enjoyable. It’s way easier then writing a paper or essay and you can pick whatever topic you want on a poem you like or poet you might want to know more about. Many people in the class have said otherwise, but I’d rather do something simple and new then repetitive and boring. Some said the assignment was boring, but we all have different views on things.

I’ve never used Wikipedia before so posting my information was quite hard at first, but then I got use to it. I learned the different ways to edit the information and played in the sandbox with editing to see if it looked correctly. The way I structured the information I would say looked quite amateurish, but I’ve learned something new and maybe I’ll decide to fix up another stub I find here and there if I find it interesting. I loved that I got to pick a topic on a poet I liked very much. His ideals and perception is something that I could relate to since I tend to gravitate towards the philosophical and scientific side of things.

The one flaw that I find in the assignment is that it might make people a bit lazy. You should definitely put a restriction on the amount of words or information you have to post. Some people may take advantage of the freedom and only post five sentences of information. Other then that, the assignment was great and it was probably the only assignment I enjoyed doing from all my classes this semester.
