Finalizing the Research Question

  • Finalized Research Question: “Does Affirmative Action Improve or Hinder Inclusion Within Colleges?”
  • Reasons for choosing this topic: I was interested in doing this research question because studying affirmative action policies in high school was eye-opening because these policies were meant to stimulate diversity and equality in different job sectors and colleges, but our society still rejects them because of its reverse discrimination. This is a highly controversial topic that needs to be explored in depth because some say that affirmative action in college admissions ensures that minorities are not discriminated against, while others argue that a student’s race and ethnicity should not be included in the admissions process. The way colleges select their students has always been mind-boggling for me because the brightest of students are rejected by their top schools. Furthermore, some academically talented and under-represented minority students to this day are still denied to some prestigious schools, which can very detrimental to their confidence. Meanwhile, colleges that do consider affirmative action policies are trying to have a diversified community, but some argue that it’s hurting those students who are not part of the minority group. Therefore, I wish to answer the questions about how colleges select their students and if the affirmative action policies really do encourage or deny inclusion within colleges. Furthermore, I look forward to seeing the different opinions college students have about considering race in the college admission process and if they agree or disagree with following affirmative action policies.

I think the question needs to be clarified. Do you want to know the effects of affirmative action for students who benefit from it? Are you trying to figure out whether affirmative action actually helps or hurts students who get into college because of it? Or are you trying to figure out how the use of affirmative action works? The ways it is applied and the reasons for it? Or (and this is something that comes up in your paragraph) are you tying to understand the arguments for and against affirmative action? Or maybe it is none of these things, but you need to clarify your question.
As for your paragraph– how does the process of what colleges do (which is what you discuss in your paragraph)connects to your question of the positive and negative sides to affirmative action in college?
