Although I enjoyed the reading, “Shitty First Drafts” didn’t really affect the way I wrote or planned out my narrative. It’s felt similar to what my many teachers have taught me before, just in a more refreshing package. I appreciated how it expressed that first drafts are meant to be really bad and how you can always improve the draft later. However, I’ll have to diverge from the notion that you should just get anything down on paper. Getting just ‘anything’ on paper doesn’t help me at all. I did try just letting my thoughts pour out but it was incredibly incoherent which is why I ended up with another draft that I did NOT settle with because that one was worse than the first. The third time was the charm, which was when I sat down and had a stroke of genius. Maybe it’s an unhealthy habit from being an artist but I better appreciate and enjoy work made from inspiration.
