ENG 1101 Sample Syllabi

Jackie Blain’s Syllabus is for a class which meets two days a week. It is set up in alignment with the “new” curriculum (that is, Jackie went through, and was instrumental in helping design our professional development)

Monroe Street’s 1101 syllabus is for a class which has all meetings, including lab hour, on a single day of the week.

Lucas Kwong divided the class into two units: the first section focused on readings concerning racism and racial justice; the second concerned the costs and benefits of technological progress. These seemed like obvious topics to spark discussion. In terms of assignments, each essay successively required the students to deal with a growing number of texts, from none (narration/description essay), to 1 (rhetorical analysis essay) to, eventually, 6+ (a researched revision of either their rhetorical analysis or their conversation essay). Rob Ostrom’s syllabus only includes the schedule of classes, but is helpful for its grid visualization of both Lab and Lecture hours. Rob’s class had Lab Hour before Lecture hour, so it’s helpful as a model for those in a similar situation (and who can’t switch the order because they meet in different classrooms for Lab and Lecture).

Charlotte Deaver’s schedule for her two lab-after-class ENG 1101 courses is complicated because one has lab after the first class of the week and the other after the second. She chose a grid format to help visualize what happens when for each section, and when office hours are.

Gregory Darling’s syllabus (ENG1101-Syllabus-CityTech-Fall2015) includes class aims, rules, course description and learning outcomes, and grading criteria, in addition to descriptions and grading values of formal assignments, which are based on rhetorical modes. The schedule includes both class and lab topics, and refers to readings in The River Reader and Rules of Thumb.

Lavelle Porter’s Syllabus is notable for its focus on readings about New York City, as it largely draws on The Place Where We Dwell reader. In addition to the requisite description of class aims, readings, and learning outcomes, it has very detailed grading criteria (much of which I’m swiping to avoid the confusion that beset my class this semester!). The syllabus does not include an explicit description of the Writing Lab hour, though, so that is something to consider.
