Breakfast around the world

I am not a breakfast person i usually skip this meal and rather have lunch and dinner. I know most people say it is the most important meal of the day but i do not think so. I usually i am in a hurry in the morning and i have little time to sit down to eat breakfast and i do not like to rush when eating so i would rather skip this meal and have some lunch later in the day. In Ghana where i come from most people do eat breakfast but it is usually a meal which is very high in carbohydrate and protein that is because most people do not usually eat lunch we do here in the United States so breakfast is usually a very heavy meal and one of the most important meals of the day. Most people also do very heavy duty work so it is very important to have a lot of carbohydrate and protein in the morning before starting your day.I find myself eating very high carbohydrate foods in the morning most at times when i do not have school and thats what i am used to, i am not a big fun of hot chocolate or egg on a roll or any kind of pastries in the morning i would rather have food very high in carbohydrate. Here is a picture of a typical breakfast in my country.

Subway potrait

I was very interested when they mentioned in the article that when the subway first started there was nothing to look at. Which is very true because it is very hard to just sit on a train and stare into peoples faces, it is very uncomfortable and distressful. It was probably a good ideal when Evan Walker decided to take photographs of subway riders. Mostly subway riders are lost in their thought or busy reading a news paper or listening to music just to avoid an awkward eye contact. Most of the pictures that Walker took of subway riders, they seem to be lost in their thought, tired or busily minding their own business by reading a news paper. It is mostly similar to see what you see on the faces of most subway riders now. It is not that very different because most people on the train are trying to keep to themselves or are lost in their thought because of all the stress we goes through in the day to day activities of their daily lives. I am not surprised Evans took an interest in wanting to photography subway riders because a lot can be told from the expression on face.

Documenting Spiritualism

i have never seen images like that of photographer Shannon Taggart before although i find it very fascinating. I am a very religious person and i do believe spirits do exist but than i do not think they do linger around the living like the way it is portrayed by Taggart. I find most of these images to be very disturbing and i do not know if its real or she may have manipulated the images to make it seem like that. i do not understand why people would want to be photograph of a spirit sitting next to them or hovering over their heads, i do understand that most people want to believe that their love ones are still with them and they can talk to them anytime they want to but i find it very creepy. I would not have a photograph of that sort in my living room it would scare the day light out of me anytime i see it. Then again its what these people believe in and they have faith in these mediums that they go to, to be able to communicate with the dead, but i do not see the need to have  photographs to document spiritualism.

Leah Morgan: Food texture

Growing up in the Caribbean I had the privilege of eating fresh fruits daily. We had an abundance of fruit and a variety from mango, tamarinds, banana, carambola, ackee, soursop to name a few. Texture played a big role for me. For me to enjoy my fruits they would have to be firm and sweet. If they were soft a mushy I wouldn’t dare to venture there. Certain foods like wise for instance rice, must be cooked grainy in order for me to enjoy the dish. In my opinion the texture of the food will play a great outcome in the end result of the dish you will end up with. Also certain recipes will call for certain textures for e.g. Banana bread will require crushed bananas. Unless you’re a baby and require your foods to be crushed. I also think that texture sells food. If you’re baking a fruit cake for some one, when you cut a slice of cake then you should be able to see the pecans, cherries, raisins etc. if you don’t see any then you don’t have a fruit cake.  Texture also changes the taste of food. If you have a mango that is all mushy it will not have the same flavor as a mango that is perfectly ripe and a little hard and soft at the same time. Texture determines the type of fruits I would purchase. The following pictures: A firm Julie mango and and tamarind ball.

spiritualism

Shannon Taghart’s photographs are great on capturing the spirits. But when you start to look the photo in her website you start to notice the photo don’t look like an documentation. She know how to position the person and how to make the affect. This is show on website because there’re articles that she upload her photo and has the same affect as the spiritualism. There is a band, sleeping on the wheel, and the painist. The portrait are the picture which don’t help the photograph to look like a documentary. It look like the light was included which you could tell that it in not natural light that is making the picture look different. The only one I see as an documentary is the photo of the ceremony. Also the technology they use to set up their spirit reading. The cabin where they do the reading too. The groups picture to see who was involved with the reading. The location will help other to know where to go to have these expiries. The knowledge of how to use the camera to make these affect help her to create this thing that are showed throughout her website. So my conclusion is no i would not consider this as an document photos.

When i think of food texture i think about how smooth, soft, rough, liquid gritty ,crunchy , lumpy ect.. the food is.I think to be able to capture the texture of food one needs to put much focus on the food by taking the best angle of the food. Most people just pick up their camera and just take a picture but if you want to capture the color or texture of food i think you need a close up focus to be able to do that.
Looking at the cherry pie that i have here on can tell the texture of the pie the cherry look very soft and smooth and the pie crust looks hard and very crunchy.

reflection on food art

I was particularly interested in the decoration of our vegetables on our plates. I found it very interesting to see all these different colors combine to create this beautiful work of art. I consider food as an art because much thought and consideration goes into making a plate look good and appetizing to the customers who are purchasing the food. When we were asked to design our plates with our vegetables i though what shapes or image could i create with this vegetables and which colors would i combine to make my plate look good and presentable. This is what i came up with, When people look at this they may see something different but what i was envisioning was a clock.
I particularly like the way i have placed the pearl onions in the four corners of the plate, giving it a four sided shape. The joy and excitement i got when i finally came up with this design on my plate is explainable i didn’t know that food could bring out my creative side and i am glade i got to design something amazing.

Leah Morgan Civil War – Food or Coffee

As a food lover I would have to say that I would give up coffee. For me food is life. I do drink coffee but once a blue, so I won’t be really missing it. Where as food for me is life, coffee for these soldiers was life. It was a bit disturbing reading that when they were desperate for a drink of coffee they would even brew the coffee in the water their horses rejected. We have a lot to be thankful for. Consuming coffee saved lives back then in the civil war. What caught my attention where there was no coffee and they would substitute coffee with roasted corn, rye and chopped beets. They got that brown colored brew but minus the coffee. I would do the same thing if I had to go without food. I would find some means, some way to provide myself with something that would nourish me or hold me until I could do better. The soldiers probably thanked GOD for hardtak and coffee, soldiers only knew ration food, salted beef etc, but thankfully I can enjoy a plate of baked macaroni and cheese, some seasoned rice, steam veggies, potato salad, lentils and baked pork chop. With that said I would have to part ways with coffee and enjoy myself a nourishing home cook meal.

Civil war food and coffee

Today almost every american drinks coffee with most of their meals, especially in the morning it is like their energy boost for the day. I never really did not know what was so great about coffee that most people could not go a day without drinking. It tasted awful to me and and really did not get it. I tried it for the first and it was one of the most awful experience because it gave me a bad headache for the whole day. Nevertheless i decided to try the it again because i needed to stay awake for my morning classes and it really gave me a boost everyone morning and i never slept in my morning classes. So for soldiers in the civil war to include coffee in their daily diet is very fascinating and i can imagine the energy that it gave them because their diet was not that nutritious and hygienic. Most Americans today can go the whole day without eating anything but just drinking coffee, one of my professor told me that she can not go a day without drinking coffee she has become so addicted to this drink she could not survive without it.It is amazing to find that soldiers got their energy and boost from what most Americans are addicted to and cannot do without. One of the food that i can not live without is cake cakes. They are one of my favorite desserts and i cant go a day without eating one.

Leah Morgan. Taking pictures of food.

Long before I started this class or even read the article taking pictures of food was one of my ways of advertising.I have always loved cooking and entertaining. On a weekend my apartment would be filled with friends and family who all came for the same reason. To savor some delicious Caribbean dishes they have not had in a long time. One day I decided to take it further. I decided rather than giving food away for free I will offer my friends these meals at a fraction of the cost than what they would have paid on the streets. One of my ways of advertising was Facebook. I took pictures of the food that I had prepared and told them this is what they can get if they came to my home. This was my break through. I went a step further by also sharing photos of my cakes that I made in the past, and as a result I got more customers. I have dedicated a few albums on my fb page for just my food and cake. Every now and then I get people sending me questions can you please help me with a recipe or tell me why my food don’t look or taste like yours. I enjoy taking pictures of food because I show people you don’t have to be in St. Lucia to enjoy a good St. Lucian meal. Most of my pictures are taken with my Iphone 4S. I’m due for an upgrade, but as for now I’m quite content with the quality of photos I get.
