Maps/city planning

In my last visit to the Brooklyn Historical Society
building our groups switch stations, which meant that we were looking at now emphasizing
on maps. Together with the group we took a look at two very different types of
maps. One was a 24”x 36” detailed drawing of a drainage system and the other
was a book showing city developments. The first one caught my eye because it
was very similar to the kind of drawings we are currently working on in one of
our architecture drawing classes. This was a very detailed manuscript made of
high quality linen. The title for this particular drawing was Maps of sewers
for House Drainage. It was constructed by District Tool Subdivision 1. This
manuscript showed how a new drainage system called culverts, would be
constructed and also distributed in that specific neighborhood. This drawing
was of much more interest to me because it showed me a connection between my English
and Architecture courses and at the same time helped me relate to the way in
which architectural drawings were constructed long before computers were
around.
