The Old and New in BHS

The Brooklyn Historical society is definitely one of the more interesting resources Brooklyn has to offer. When I was walking to the library I dreaded that it would be another boring history lecture. However, when I arrived there I was taken by surprise. From just arriving there I noticed that the building was old but it didn’t look old. The building had an old style to it with the bas-relief and statue heads on it’s exterior walls, yet it still looked new and fresh.

When I walked in, I took my seat and listened to what the librarians had to say. To my surprise they weren’t dull or uninterested but rather enthusiastic about what they were talking about which made me enjoy looking at the photos more. My group viewed photos that showed different workers who worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during different time periods. During the World War II era it was primarily women but as time went on there were more color photos of men (most of them happened to look very exhausted or upset). Aside from the librarians, my attention was diverted to the way the library was laid out, I noticed how the second floor was a balcony wrapped around the outer edge; something I have never seen before.
