  1. You describe this photo well. The drama come from the low angle from which the photographer shoots isolating the Flat iron building against the sky. The building does look tall in a way but it also looks very small, only about three times taller than a traffic light.

    The photographer would have also been thinking about other famous photographs of this building. In particular, those by Alfred Steiglitz and Edward Steichen. Sometimes photographers make photographs that directly address other photographs. Michael Kenna’s image looks very realistic compared to the romanticism of both early 20th century photographers.
