IMAGE EDITING + PHOTOMONTAGE CREATION

ABSTRACT

Publish, archive, presentation. Relevant design software. Workflow between programs.

CLASS OBJECTIVES

There is a symbiosis between making by hand and making digitally. In the first weeks of Arch 1112, you have made a model and drawn orthographic views of that model. Now, you will learn:

  • How to record your analog work and edit and re-create your work digitally.
  • How to combine a series of images; some produced by you (photos taken of the Rectilinear forms models) and others collected in order to create a new composite drawing that will attempt to contextualize the project in an environment.

You will examine pros and cons of working with analog and digital media for this assignment and throughout the semester.

PART A) IMAGE EDITING: COLOR AND PERSPECTIVE CORRECTION

CLASS DISCUSSION

A) COLLECT IMAGE FILES

B) SCAN HARD COPY IMAGES VIA MOBILE ‘NOTES’ APP

C) USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP:

  1. IMPORT a raster image (jpg, tiff, pdf, etc.)
  2. CREATE a new file in Photoshop: image size, resolution, background, mode, etc.
  3. EDIT an image using crop, adjust color, brightness and clean images tools
    • Adjust RESOLUTION to 300dpi
    • CROP image as necessary: positive / negative space composition
    • Change color MODE
      • Color: CMYK vs RGB
      • B/W: grayscale vs. black / white
    • Adjust Levels (CONTRAST)
    • Adjust HUE and SATURATION (color)
    • Adjust any DISTORTION (FREE TRANSFORM)
    • RESIZE Image (image size to be determined in class, per portfolio size)
    • CLEAN Image (magic wand, quick selection, eraser, clone stamp etc.)
    • SAVE as different FILE TYPES: .psd, .jpg, .pdf etc.

EXERCISE

Format and edit 12 carefully selected photographs (4 for each model,) following the general guidelines outlined above, in The Class Discussion.

DELIVERABLES

DUE 09/09

Upload edited photos to Miro and revise your portfolio accordingly.

PART B) APPLY SHADING + TEXTURE

EXERCISE

Use the 30/60 axonometric of your final composition that you drafted in Rhino.

Apply 3-tone shading with texture.

DELIVERABLES

DUE 09/16

Upload shaded axonometric 30/60 to Miro and include in your portfolio.

PART C) PHOTOMONTAGE

CLASS DISCUSSION

A) DEFINITIONS

What is a Photomontage and how do Architects use the as a tool for conveying ideas?

Definition: a combination of several photographs joined together for artistic effect or to show more of the subject than can be shown in a single photograph.

B) COLLECT Image files

Understand how to select a series of images for constructing a photomontage. Image: size, type, mode, resolution,  sun and perspective anglesCOMBINE

C) COMBINE

Understand how to combine multiple images

Understand differences between images; light intensity, color saturation, scale and perspective angle.

D) USING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP:

  1. EDIT the collected images in preparation for inserting in the photomontage.
    • MATCH resolution and image mode of all images
    • CHECK and adjust image sizes as necessary
    • REMOVE/delete any parts of the image that will not be used in the photomontage (magic wand, quick selection, eraser, clone stamp etc…)
  2. CREATE a new file in Adobe Photoshop: image size, resolution, background, mode, etc.
    • INSERT edited images into the new document
    • ORGANIZE layers into the proper order and groups, rename them accordingly.
    • Adjust Levels (CONTRAST in light)
    • Adjust HUE and SATURATION (color)
    • Adjust any DISTORTION (TRANSFORM) match perspective angles and scale between images
    • CONTEXTUALIZE use layer opacity and the creation of shadows to help merge information between layers
    • SAVE as different FILE TYPES: .psd, .jpg, .pdf etc.

EXERCISE

Create a photomontage for your rectilinear final model following the general guidelines outlined above, in the Class Discussion.

  • Include a background image, preferably eye-level
  • Use 300dpi resolution
  • Use Color Mode: CMYK
  • Use layers and sublayers (make sure to rename them as necessary)
  • Include a scale figure
  • Include shadows
