Project II

1. Pre-Production
As discussed in class today, in preparation for Project II, you all must suggest at least one idea each for a short project using Tricaster. This will be part of your grade (pre-production). You should post your comments in this thread.

Then, you are also encouraged to comment your fellow students’ ideas. Thinks of props and logistics, too.

Deadline for you to post ideas here is 8 pm, Saturday, December 19th. After that, I will make some recommendations on whose ideas are appropriate or possibly combine some of your ideas together before Monday.

2. An Example from Today

This is what we produced in class today:

“Aion the King”

It took us a while to set this up, but it was because nothing was planned in advance. Therefore, pre-production will be very important for Project II

3. Technical Aspects of “Aion the King”

– we used 2 cameras
– 3 mics (2 lavs)

Tricaster
Overlay settings:
– Input A was the camera 1 showing Aion
– Input B was a still image of landscape
– Virtual BFR was selected

DSK:
– DSK 1 was the camera 2 showing the bowling pins
– In the Virtual Delegate, DSK was selected

Program Bus:
Monitor Virtual Input 1

4. Content

If you wish to give a meaning to your project, you could look up some proverbs for inspiration. For example, the video, “Aion the King,” could be about this proverb:

“Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.”
[Preface to Brissot’s Address to His Constituents (1794)]” ― Edmund Burke, On Empire, Liberty, and Reform: Speeches and Letters

5. OK. Please being posting your ideas and make comments on other people’s ideas.

    Hi everyone,

So for my idea (Flying reporter), we already have:
    – Video of the sky
-Picture of city (background for the weatherman
    -Costume (for the Flystaightman)
-A wind sound effect (thanks Raul)
    -A fan
    -An apple

    What I need:

While flying, Flystaighman will grab many thing from the sky, so please bring any objects that you would never see flying (ex: comb, A branch or a t-shirt).

    Let’s have fun guys!!

We have the bowling pins as you know. We also have some professionally made teeth, but they are actually quite expensive. So, don’t count on them. Someone can bring some fruits. For example, an apple can be flying, and the “Flystaighman” can grab it, and eats it. We may see a huge shark with its opened mouth (jaw) if someone has one. Oh, we have a guitar. So, there are so many possibilities. I hope people will bring some creative items!

I will also need 5 volunteers to run the scene on stage.
      -one actor for the weatherman
-one actor for for Flystraight man
-one stagehand to operate the fan
-one stagehand to move the cape (I attached 2 string on the cape)
-one stagehand for throwing props at Flystraight man.

The text will be very limited. The weather say, “we have a special reporter to talk about the weather today”and we switch to Flystraightman. While flying and talking about the weather, he grabs the objects we throw at him/her and say, “we can find anything up there!”

    All,

Thank you for posting and sharing your ideas. OK. It is Sunday, and we should select some of them for Project II.

Yarie was the first person to post some creative ideas and beautiful drawings before anyone else. Thank you. A cooking show is a great suggestion, but I do know from my experience that it is quite complex to produce any cooking TV program, especially when a studio is not our set up for it specifically. You can bring any props if you wish, and if anyone else can bring some other items without totally depending on her, that will be good.

However, because of the time limitations to achieve the project after the written final exam, I think the ideas, which were suggested by Max and Jonathan are possibly more realistic as long as they plan out the setups further, or at least bring necessary stills, moving images, and props. Then, I can suggest some ways to modify the storylines, and possibly combine different ideas, suggested by different people.

Raul’s suggestion is fine, yet I think we should focus on ideas, which don’t have many dialogues as no one is trained to be actors or writers in our department. And, again, there will be not much time in class tomorrow. I like the idea of you bringing an audio file for Max’ story. I think we can import it and loop it.

Thanks, Joe W. for your suggestion, too. But we needed more info. on what images, stills, and props, which you will be able to bring.

Consequently, I think we will have time to do what Max and Jonathan suggested. After that, if there is any time left, we can try to do Yarie’s, but I know that it can be quite complex.

Please communicate with each other to determine who will bring what. I’m writing this to the entire class.

During the production (Project II), no one should be standing or sitting around. Everyone’s participation will be graded for the project. Hope all of you will find a job to do throughout the project. Everyone will operate the Tricaster, camera, audio, and so on as we rotate the positions. Even when you are not on any of the equipment, you must focus on the project.

Good luck on the final and Project II. It will be a big day, and will be the last session!

though i like the interview idea, we have done it many times this semester. That could be good because we would be more prepared to set up the production fast and smoothly. However, because we have done it so many times it could be better do something different. we have all learned alot about studio operations this semester and can try out some of those ideas. i like idea of the dragon ball z martial arts theme. it would definitely be comical. We have some great (in a corny way) preset backgrounds, along with preset transitions. ( we all love the explosion fade). when it comes the the martial arts theme , one i idea i have is that the the fighters are jumping through different scenes while fighting. with a push of a button the background scene can change instantly.

above is good martial arts music.

I found your “late” comment, Rich. The music is fine. In the fighting sequence, the background could change possibly. For example, when of the fighters jumps away high from in front of a temple, by the time he/she lands, it could be in the mountains or in the bamboo woods.

My idea is an interview with me about a video project I’m currently working on. The finished product will be done by Monday for intro to video. The interviewer will be sarcastic and I will come off as a tool who thinks he’s better than sliced bread. There will be a clip to plug. However instead of showing it on its own feed, it will be shown in the background of the studio. The virtual studio could go to black, the interviewer and I will turn around and watch the video once the clip is done it will turn back to black and fade into the virtual studio.

Cam one will be a two shot
Cam two will cover the interviewer
Cam three will cover the interviewee

My idea would be an interview after a sports event. There could be a interview going on in a stadium with an interviewer and a fan. There could be snow in the background while the interview is taking place. In the second camera, someone can throw a snowball at either person which could halt the interview.

    Input A: The Interview
    Input B: Throwing the snowball
DSK: The interviewer’s name being introduced in the beginning

I was thinking we do a martial arts skit similar to Dragonball Z. Two people are fighting in front of the greenscreen, the background is a green plains landscape. Then one guy says, “Alright, time to end it!” and we cut to a CU of him raising his hands, charging up an energy ball from above. We bring in an image of an energy ball, set it to a DSK, bring it down from above his head using the Position knob (like we did with the bowling pins), and when he throws it, we expand it in size to make it look like its coming toward the camera. Maybe we can add an explosion transition or fade to white so we can change the Background to a destroyed wasteland.
We then cut to the other guy being behind that background, with a big green hole in his stomach so it looks like the energy ball when through him. He staggers a bit and says, “Remember… me…” and dies.

    The End.

      Ok Jonathan,
You were write, I prefer your idea as mine. I just have a small concern, how are we going to make the energy ball? Can we crop something as a circle?

    Hi everyone,
So ryoya inspired me when throughing the idea of superman. The name of the scene is called, “we really find everything in the sky”. We would use the table cover of green paper and le wall to recreate the air. The superhero would be flying and find multiple object in air. A comb, a sandwich or scarf are some possible exemples. I will bring a fan, find a video of a sky, and bring as much props as I can. The super hero could also be a reporter.
Here is the list of what we would use :
    – 2 cameras. One for the presenter and one for the superhero.
    – 3 .mics. One for the presenter, one for the superhero, and one for somebody who would do a wind effect.

I would prefer SFX, and I thought about it, but we have not tried yet to import sound into the Tricaster and I don’t want to spend hours trying figured it out. Bring some anyway and we will see.
        Thanks Raul

The stop for the tricaster will be :

-Cam 1 : Superhero in front of the chroma key (Sky)
-Cam 2 : weather man in front of the chroma key (Sky back ground)
-DSK 1 : Lower third title with superhero’s name (Flystraightman)
-DSK 2 : Lower third title with weatherman’s name (Robert Temperature)

I am currently editing the sky video with a small wind noise background to simplify the process

“Cook it Up!” with your host (NAME HERE)

My idea is a dangerously funny cooking show.

In “Cook it Up!” the host will teach us a very basic cooking principles such as frying an egg or cutting vegetables. The twist is that the host is incredibly bad at cooking; food will be flying out of their hands and land on the camera lens (virtual produce of course), pots will fall, and fingers will be severed!

Since the host and the cooking tools will be shot using two different cameras it will be really funny to have someone else’s hands handle the food while the host in the separate shot just makes facial expressions.

To make it look magical/ as if the food is moving by itself someone can wear green gloves as they handle the props!

    For Tricaster settings:
    Input A : Host
Input B: Stove, cutting tools, pots, etc.
    Virtual BFR: Food!

Will draw out some sample shoots and share it with you all!

Let me know what y’all think. Feedback is always welcomed! Now let’s get cooking!
