Project I Group “Banana”

In this group, the members are Greg, Dominique, Richard, Maxell, Karla, and Mike.

Project I, Group “Banana” on Youtube (in-progress):

You all must discuss in this thread how you prepare and how you will do things differently in the very next session. These are some of my comments as follows.

1. LS Maxwell sitting, Jay St.
The framing is nice. We are all familiar with this location near our building on Jay St., but you made this place look interesting with the sidewalk, the bench, the trees, Voorhees Hall, and the Manhattan Bridge.

2. MS Richard sitting, and getting up
I would say, this is wider than MS. I get the feeling probably because he has a lot of headroom. The framing needs to be tighter.

In the later takes, the framing is better. You could have started tiling up the camera as Rich waves at someone. A nice hugging between Rich and Dominique! Make sure not to move the camera at all when we see the two gentlemen walking away in a distance.

3. LS Greg in front of Voorhees
I’m watching this footage on my laptop on my airplane now. So, it is difficult to examine whether the camera is horizontal to the ground, especially in the first take. Is it? The second take is good. I like the way how the camera follows the two characters to some extent, and let them exiting the frame. Well done.

4. Side view, people walking by
First, we see the fence and all the “headless people” walking by. Then, the camera zoomed out. I didn’t know that the camera was quite far from the subject(s).

5. OK. Then, I see Mike and Greg walking by. It would have been good to have them walking a little slower. It is a film, and so you can direct your actors to walk at different speeds than in reality. As the featured characters in this “story”, I would wan to see them a little longer. But the way how the camera followed Greg and let him existing are very good.

Time Matters:
I think this group still has many shots to do. Before the next session, you all need to plan more in detail: for example, you will need to know where the camera should be, where the actors should be, how fast/slow they should move, and who to operate the camera for each shot/setting. Plan, plan, and plan, so that even if you end up changing something, you will know exactly what you are adjusting and how you are improving your original plan. No planning should happen during the production.

Best!

Good. Richard, you have commented on all the three groups’ footage. That’s wonderful. For this your own group, I assume you meat the shot around 4 min. 40 seconds. Yes, it almost looks like a shot from a narrative film. Now, for this group, the challenge is to get more shots done on Thursday. How can you prepared for the remaining shots to be efficient? Are there also any shots you think the group needs to redo?

I think our group spent a lot of time trying to figure out how we should do each shot when we should have planned the shots out more in advance. I Think we should be able to get the rest of the shots done more quickly tomorrow since most of them are inside and we won’t have to wait for things we can’t control such as other people or cars being in the way. In the shot at 4min and 40 seconds, we had to start walking faster because there was a car coming so we didn’t want to get hit. It was towards the end of class so we didn’t get to reshoot the shot. I think we should probably reshoot it tomorrow though.

I think that some of the shots should of been a little shorter I felt as if the were a little too long and we also need to work on the shots at the end of the video more

i believe that more than anything we should’ve planned the shots ahead of time and really let the actors know where and when they should exit or enter the scene with better communication. Shot 2:01 was suppose to be a medium shot and I agree that there was a lot of head space in the shot and that will be fixed.

The footage we shot today was a step up from the last batch. We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about what to do and just did it.

Everybody participated and got hands-on in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

I do love the style and look of the shots. The crew has a very cinematic eye when camera operating and directing.

    Great job team.
