Listening Log Week 1

Song: I Can Tell by Travis Scott

[3 Phrases]

“504 Hot Boyz minus the bad rap, like Silkk the Shocker.”

“Tilt the posture, sick, pass the bottle.”

“But I’ma pull up the silk to shock her with the silk.”

[3 Repetitions]

“Yeah, I can tell baby, I can tell.”

“Yeah, gone out of your way, you know we can tell.”

“You aint told no tale, you ain’t told no tales.”

[3 changes]

I noticed that Trav started off casually and explaining his come up to then an explosive mid way which coincides with lyrics symbolizing “making it out the wood” all the meanwhile explaining his current mindset and foresight as a star thus implying he’s seen it all before on his way to the top, from ideas, to schemes and plans.

Listening Log Week One

Song: Paid My Dues by NF

Three Phrases That Strike Me:

“They get paid for trashin’ people, I get paid ’cause I stay workin’”

“… you really gotta dig in your heart if you wanna get to the root of an issue”

“Just remember though, I’m only a man, I’m a human being.”

Those lines strikes me because they have a very deep message. I feel like many people go through different things in life, they are being criticized, they are being affected by social media, and etc.

Three Repetitions:

“Paid my dues, made it through”

“Spread the news, I need some room”

“Thought we’d cool Well, don’t assume, don’t assume”

Two Changes That I’ve Noticed:

One of the changes I noticed in the music is that the beat builds up as it gets to the chorus.

Another change that I noticed is the song starts from the piano and goes to a hard beat.

Listening Log – Week 1

Song: The Bones by Maren Morris and Hozier

Three Phrases That Strike Me:

“Life sure can try to put love through it but we built this right, so nothings ever gonna move it”

“No, it don’t always go the way we planned it, but the wolves came and went and we’re still standing”

“When there ain’t a crack in the foundation, baby I know any storm we’re facing will blow right over.. the house don’t fall when the bones are good”.

Three Repetitions:

“When the bones are good, the rest don’t matter”

“Yeah, the paint could peel, the glass could shatter”

“Let it rain, cause’ you and I, remain the same”

Three Changes That I’ve Noticed:

Throughout the first chorus there is a slow buildup in instruments which continues until the very end of the first chorus.

When the chorus is repeated for the second time it goes straight into a consistent high upbeat rather than a buildup as it was in the first chorus.

When the male voice sung by Hozier comes in, it comes in very slowly, giving the listeners a calm surprise which leads to both artists intentionally never being on the exact same pitch which sounds really good to listen to.

There are so many valuable lessons that I pull from this, the most important to me was that anything in life needs to have a solid foundation. This foundation could be a friendship before a romantic relationship, genuinely getting to know someone before passing judgment or even selflove, we may face arguments, self doubt, emotional uncertainties, or sadness but if it’s built on top of  a great foundation of friendship or self love we will make it through and be okay.

Listening Log Assignment #1

Song: “Heart to Break” Kim Petras

1)Three Repetitions:

“Even if it means that I’ll never put myself back together
Gonna give you my heart to break”
“Even if I’ll end up in shatters, baby, it doesn’t matter
Gonna give you my heart to break”
“I tried to fight, but I can’t help it
Don’t care if this is my worst mistake”

2)Three Changes I’ve noticed:

There’s a quick breakdown right before the second pre-chorus.

Towards the end of the song the artist sings their own backup layered on the track.

The song ends with with a final note then phases out as emphasis.

3)Three Phrases that strike me:

“One look at you, I’m powerless
I feel my body saying “yes””
“Where’s my self control? Ah
And when you touch me, I’m a fool”
“This game I know I’m gonna lose
Makes me want you more”

As someone who has been pretty unlucky in love so far, this song speaks to the innocence of wanting to be in love or having a love, even when you know the exchange is not synergistic. It’s unhealthy, but the feeling of being infatuated makes it seem worth while. You intentionally throw caution to the wind even with  blatant warning signs. I think it’s a pretty contemporary pop love song.

Listening Log #1

Song I choose is “Welcome to the machine” by Pink Floyd

This song does not have lots of lyrics but does have some very power musical notes and the few lyrics it does have are moving. This song is all about interpretation.

Repeating lines

“Welcome, my son. Welcome to the machine. Where have you been? Its all right we know where you’ve been. Welcome, my son. Welcome to the machine. What did you dream? Its all right we told you what to dream.”

Two lines that stuck with me were

“And you didn’t like school. And you know you’re nobody’s fool”

These lines spoke to me for the deeply profound message the song is providing. They recently had lost their leader of the band, Syd Barret, not from passing but from a mental collapse. I relate to these lyrics because I don’t enjoy school and I don’t believe school makes or breaks you. So even without a formal education, you can be somebody great.

Three changes in the music

The song starts with an eerie noise almost as a spaceship is about to take off. Very strange noises

Then the lyrics come into play they add the acoustics of the guitar and still keep a bunch of those sci-fi noises

Towards the ending of the song the lyrics stop and the music intensifies to the very end. It sounds like someone is driving off to an event because you hear the roaring engine of the car and then chatter of the crowd then nothing

Song: Fake Love

Artists: Drake

1). 3 phrases  in the song strike me were:

” I got fake people showing fake love to me”

“Somethin’ ain’t right when we talkin’
Somethin’ ain’t right when we talkin’
Look like you hidin’ your problems”

“That’s when they smile in my face”

The song strike me because I am still true to what I say and do. The world views love as a cover up to wrongdoings, atrocities, wrongdoings, and glorifying violence. Love should me peace, serenity, and being true without any violation of human dignity.

2). Repetition that I noticed

“I’ve been down so long, it look like up to me
They look up to me
I got fake people showin’ fake love to me
Straight up to my face, straight up to my face
I’ve been down so long, it look like up to me
They look up to me
I got fake people showin’ fake love to me
Straight up to my face, straight up to my face”

3). 3 changes I noticed in the song are, the tone,  the message, and the reaction. The tone is basically saying that love should be like from the past that it must not only to have good things, but to correct mistakes also. The message is that the real definition of love is respect and understanding. The reaction is that how should we execute love, not only romantic love but also for brotherly love for everyone.

Emanuel Pichardo Listening log-1

Song: Tye Tribbett- We Gon’Be Alright

3 Repetitions I notice:
Music:
The Song repeats a lot the triplet hi hat through the whole song.
The 808 Bass plays the same patterns in the intro and also at the end of the song as well.
Song:
“We gon’ be alright, we gon’ be alright
We gon’ be alright, alright
We gon’ be alright, we gon’ be alright
We gon’ be alright, alright.”

3 Changes I notice in the music:
Music:
One change is when the song gets to the chorus and gets to the build up.
The song also goes from singing to rapping through the whole song.
In the song it goes from no drum to a calm melody.

3 phrases that strike me:
“In these last days
Evil times will come and it’s here today
Look at all the hate
Senseless crime and murder everyday
Human trafficking, racism, policy brutality
Bullying, rape, child molesta shun the appearance of evil I pray

Let Your Kingdom come, let Your will be done
In the Earth
Let Your glory rise, let Your Son shine
Let it burst
Through the dark clouds”

“We gon’ be alright, we gon’ be alright
We gon’ be alright”
The battle isn’t yours, this belongs to the Lord
Stand still, don’t fight, we know that
We gon’ be alright”

When i heard this song it made me feel that even after all we are going through right now in this world and in this country, i know and have hope that everything is going to be alright. I trust in God and I know he will keep my family safe and everyone i Love. I know that everything happens for a purpose and i know that at the end of all of this thing will get better.

Listening Log Week 1

Song: Loyal(remix) by PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake, and Bad Bunny

Repetitions:
“All the way around, I’m loyal”
“I got money on me, I’m loyal”
“I got money on my pocket, I’m loyal”

Changes I noticed:
-The tempo of the song changes from a steady one to a slow one when they start singing the lyrics.
-The bass comes in and out in certain portions of the song.
-The beat speeds up when Bad Bunny comes in and starts rapping in Spanish.

Phrases that strike me:
“Pain doesn’t belong here anymore”
“I just don’t want any war”
“Pain goes away when you’re with me”

These lyrics strike me because I consider myself a pacifist, meaning I don’t want any negativity or drama in my life. This is a party song therefore when we are in a party or gathering we don’t want pain or drama in the places that are supported to be nothing but fun.

Listening Log Week 1 – Draft

The song I chose was Complexion(A Zulu Love)

  1. Two lines that were striking and stuck with me were,
  • “Light don’t mean you smart, bein’ dark don’t make you stupid
And frame of mind for them bustas, ain’t talkin’ “Woo-hah!”
  • “12 years of age, thinkin’ my shade too dark
I love myself, I no longer need Cupid.”

Growing up was hard for me because I’m simply black. Many people, friends , even teachers made me feel bad because the color of my skin. It makes you believe from a young age you will never be somebody. Thanks to my family I was taught you love yourself and accept who you are because everyones life is important.

2. Three changes in the music,

  • The beat changes when the chorus starts
  • Different instruments are introduced midway through the song
  • No music is played at the end of the song

3. Three repetitions I notice,

  • The words and beat for the chorus are the same “Complexion (two-step) Complexion don’t mean a thing (it’s a Zulu love)
Ooh, Complexion (two-step). It all feels the same (it’s a Zulu love)”
  • The beat of the drum stays the same through out the song.
  • The words in the song are all the same pitches.

Listening Log Assignment #1

Listening Log Assignment: song used – Adore You by Harry Styles
1) Three phrases in the song that striked me were:

“You don’t have to say you love me
You don’t have to say nothing
You don’t have to say you’re mine”

They striked me because these lyrics represent relationships in modern 21st century such as no commitment, and label-less to the youth which allows the person to feel less pressured in what a relationship is really like.

2) Three repetitions I noticed in the song were:

“I’d walk through fire for you
Just let me adore you
Like it’s the only thing I’ll ever do”

It seems that the chorus in the song always repeats these three same phrases.

3) In the song, I did not notice any changes it always stayed on topic along with the same tone which is a happy one.

Stephanie Dirani- Listening Log Week 1

Song: Stressed Out by Twenty-One Pilots

3 Repetitions I notice-

  • Music:
    • The bass in the introduction repeats the same notes.
    • The drum beat repeats as well.
  • Words: The chorus lyrics repeat: ” Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days when our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.”

3 Changes I notice in the music-

  • Music:
    • Change from singing to rapping at one point.
    • Piano comes in during a part of the song.
    • The instruments/beat changes during the chorus.

3 phrases that strike me-

  • “I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink
But now I’m insecure and I care what people think.”
  • “Out of student loans and tree-house homes we all would take the latter.”
  • “Used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face saying, ‘Wake up, you need to make money’ yeah.”

When we were children, we couldn’t wait to grow up and be adults and now that we’re there we would do anything to go back because adulthood isn’t as fulfilling as we thought it would be. Just look at the things we see and experience every day. We all just want to run away so that we can maintain our sanity. We work to survive and survive to work only to sleep, wake-up, and repeat. I wish all I had to worry about is whether to use my Orange or Yellow crayon to draw the sun.

Stephanie Dirani- Listening Log- Week 2

Song: Good as Hell (Feat. Ariana Grande)-[Remix] by Lizzo

3 Repetitions I notice-

Music:

  • The piano in the introduction repeats the same notes.
  • The snapping repeats as well.
  • Words: The chorus lyrics repeat: “I do my hair toss, check my nails Baby, how you feelin’? (Feelin’ good as hell)”

3 Changes I notice in the music-

Music:

  • The switch from Lizzo to Ariana
  • At one point there’s a little maraca shake.
  • The music stops to allow for a small piano solo.

3 phrases that strike me-

  • “Come now, come dry your eyes You know you a star, you can touch the sky I know that it’s hard but you have to try If you need advice, let me simplify”
  • “If he don’t love you anymore Just walk your fine ass out the door.”
  • “Cause he better know my worth There’s so much that I deserve But I ain’t worried now, I’ma let my hair down He been tryin’ it, but not today.”

This song could talk about someone that’s just ready to get out of a relationship that isn’t working anymore, but I also believe it low-key speaks volumes about leaving a toxic relationship. I say low-key because the music is so upbeat and confidence-boosting. When I think of a song about a relationship gone wrong I usually hear the sadness and pain. But in this song, Lizzo all about that “I could give two shits about you because you don’t give a shit about me” And she’s singing to us like a best friend would, like “You’re gonna do what I’m about to tell you because I tell you it with love!”. If someone doesn’t love you, chances are they’re going to make that obvious. They’re going to treat you differently and with less care, or they may fake their way through it to get what they want from you. But the moment you realize that person doesn’t love you anymore, then you better walk right out that door because you know what you’re worth and what you have to offer. That’s the final message I get from both, Lizzo and Ariana.

Listening Log Week 3:
Song: Hey Look Ma I Made It– Panic at the Disco

(I thought this appropriate with pinning and graduation season)

3 Repetitions I notice-

Music:

  • The guitar tune that starts in the beginning.
  • The clapping effect.
  • The chorus: “Hey look ma I made it, hey look ma I made it. Everything’s coming up Aces…”

3 Changes I notice in the music-

Music:

  • The drumbeat comes in and out around the chorus.
  • When the band switches into and out of the chorus.
  • The trumpets that come in for the chorus.

3 phrases that strike me-

  • “Friends are happy for me Or they’re honey-suckle phonies”
  • “Then they celebrate my medals Or they wanna take my trophies”
  • “And if you never know who you can trust Then trust me you’ll be lonely, oh”

These three phrases really hit home for me. I’ve been burned one too many times and these speak the truth. People only want something to do with you when you’re successful, when you have status, and/or when you have money. Not all are like that, there’s a select few that genuinely are happy to celebrate with you. But even then, you never know who you can trust because sometimes it’s those closest to you that end up stabbing you in the back. After all, they say “keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” In the end, we’re all someone’s enemy. (Sorry for all the depressive stuff haha)

Stephanie Dirani- Listening Log Week 4

Song: Stay Awake by Dean Lewis

3 Repetitions I notice-

Music:

  • The guitar in the introduction repeats the same notes.
  • The drum beat repeats as well keeping the tempos for the verses.
  • Words: The chorus lyrics repeat: “Stay awake, stay awake, stay awake with me.”

3 Changes I notice in the music-

Music:

  • The tempo changes from verse to chorus back to verse
  • Harmonies come in at the chorus.
  • The chorus is more upbeat than the verses.

3 phrases that strike me-

  • “Cause they say the bigger the love, the harder the fall Well, I’m crashing through the floor”
  • “I’ve been looking in the mirror Trying to figure myself out”
  • “All our memories are packed into boxes Stacked up against the door”

The phrase with the biggest impact was, “I’ve been looking in the mirror Trying to figure myself out”. Many people don’t need to be going through a heartbreak to be standing in front of a mirror trying to figure themselves out. So many things can happen to a person which makes them question who they are whether it be heartbreak, self-esteem, hitting rock-bottom, feeling like everything is going wrong in their life, feeling lost, not knowing who you are anymore, searching for the love you have for yourself. The list goes on, but it’s never wrong to take a look in the mirror and really look at what you’re seeing. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, look into your own eyes and you’d be surprised at what you can find.
